OMSI Mentor to Youth- Volunteer with Teens this Summer!

OMSI is in need of strong mentors to assist with our summer teen program, Rising Stars. Mentors should be comfortable working with teens, able to model professionalism, and provide appropriate feedback to our youth.

POSITION SUMMARY: Mentor to Youth volunteers interact with and provide support to high school students participating in OMSI’s summer Rising Stars youth volunteer training program. This is a critical position that supports OMSI educator staff and ensures that Risings Stars participants have a positive, productive volunteer experience. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: · Work a weekly five-hour shift (11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.) with eight to 12 youth volunteers for the duration of the summer Rising Stars program (June 19 through September 3). · Guide students’ development of career skills, such as public speaking, customer service, and teaching techniques. · Assist youth with presenting science demonstrations and activities to the public, and with developing their own science demonstrations. · Model positive and appropriate workplace behavior for youth. · Provide work-related guidance for youth volunteers who have little or no prior work experience. · Assist OMSI volunteer coordinators and educators with evaluation of youth volunteers.

QUALIFICATIONS: · Kind, concerned adult who supports, guides, and encourages students. · Positive role model who applies their knowledge, experience and genuine concern to help youth volunteers navigate through the challenges of the OMSI workplace. · Energetic, decisive, diplomatic, and able to work in a busy, dynamic environment. · Able to recognize and reach out to youth who need support and guidance and provide them with sustained attention. · Dependable, punctual. · Self-directed and willing to take initiative. · Able to stand and walk for an extended period of time.
