position summary:

The Healing Roots Center, located in N/NE Portland, is a culturally-specific drop-in, resource center serving African-American and African domestic violence survivors.

•Hours: Minimum of 10 hours per month; minimum 6 month commitment •Training: On the job training/shadowing required; completion of 40-hour direct service training preferred. Additional training may be required in the first six months.

Required Skills and Abilities:Duties/ Responsibilities: 1.Answer front door, respond to needs of drop-in participants, (i.e., provide food box, toiletries) and familiarize participants with Healing Roots Center services, (ie. computer usage, book check-out, advocacy, support groups, and other programming). 2.Answer phone and provide support, information and referrals to callers as needed. 3.Refer participants to appropriate intra-agency programs and/or community resources. 4.Provide crisis intervention and advocacy as needed, with the support on-site staff. 5.Carry out emergency procedures in case of fire, medical emergencies, unwanted visitors, etc. 6. Communicate with Bradley Angle Staff regularly, relaying messages and information as needed. 7.Other duties as negotiated.
Qualifications:Qualifications: 1.Familiarity working in the African-American and/or African communities. 2.Familiarity with cultural competency. 3.Familiarity with domestic and family violence, resources, and service paradigms. 4.Demonstrated knowledge of and experience working/living within the African/African American community 5.Ability to listen and communicate effectively, in person, in writing and on the telephone. 6.Ability to relate non-judgmentally to women and children from different backgrounds. 7.Commitment to learning about, understanding, and working with survivors of domestic and sexual violence. 8.Commitment to incorporating understanding of the interrelationship of oppressions (racism, homophobia, sexism, classism, sizism, etc.) into service provision. 9.Ability to maintain accurate records, confidentiality, and commit to current personnel policies.
