position summary:

ROSE Community Development, a nonprofit organization serving outer southeast Portland neighborhoods is seeking to fill the position of Youth Program Intern. ROSE’s mission is to build community and strengthen neighborhood economies that Revitalize Outer South East. ROSE programs include affordable housing development, community economic development and building social capital.

The Youth Program Intern will establish positive relationships with parents and youth of ROSE housing, establish goals for internship and gain a better understanding of ROSE CDC’s mission through contact with other ROSE staff, Resident Assets Coordinator and ROSE families and youth through out the summer.

Salary / Pay Rate:Compensation: This is a non-paid, part-time, temporary position (10-15 hours/week). However, it offers you the opportunity to gain great work experience working with youth and families in the social work, community organizing and community development field. Job starts July 6 and ends September 2, 2010.

Required Skills and Abilities:Must be able to: •Establish and maintain positive relationships with parents and youth •Assist in planning and recruiting residents for programs and activities •Empower kids to do for themselves-assign small jobs, have kids assist in clean-up, have older kids serve as mentors, etc. •Be a positive role model: listen to the children, teach and model good behavior •Create a safe place for children to learn, eat, and play •Enforce program policies •Provide rules and reinforcement to encourage good behavior •Supervise children during activities (both inside and on the playground)
Qualifications:Experience, education or interest working with and mentoring youth. Experience, education or interest to work with families from diverse cultural backgrounds. Understanding of barriers for low income youth. Reliable transportation. Bilingual (Spanish, Russian and Somali) speakers highly desired, not required. Position may be subject to a criminal background check.
