The Leach Botanical Garden, located on the wooded banks of Johnson Creek, is seeking a transformational leader as its next Executive Director.

About the Organization: The 16-acre Garden boasts an incredible amount of botanical diversity, with collections of more than 2,000 species and cultivars native to the Northwest and Southeast as well as Asia.

The Executive Director reports to Leach Garden Friends, a non-profit organization that operates the garden in partnership with the City of Portland. The Friends are dedicated to preserving the original collection of John and Lilla Leach, as well as introducing Northwest native plants to the community.

The Opportunity: A dynamic, skilled and visionary Executive Director is needed to help transform the Garden from its current state as one of Portland's "hidden jewels" into a preeminent botanical garden integral to the neighborhood, city and region. Growth has already begun with several promising new partnerships, including with the Audubon Society of Portland, which recently opened an East Portland office at the Garden.

Required Skills and Abilities:The Executive Director bears responsibility for all executive, strategic, programmatic, financial, and management functions. Duties include, but are not limited to, developing the organization’s financial, creative, and human resources; forging collaborative partnerships; articulating and advancing the organization’s vision; leading the organization’s strategic development; working effectively with the organization’s Board of Directors; and increasing the visibility of Leach Botanical Garden. Specifically, we seek the candidate who will:  Provide the leadership necessary to shape the organization and take it to a higher level of development.  Actively seek out, develop and nurture collaborative partnerships that are beneficial to the future of the garden.  Build, develop, and retain strong, positive relationships with major donors, community leaders, members of the Board of Directors, volunteers, and other potential partners.  Raise the profile, reputation, and visibility of Leach Botanical Garden.  Assist the City of Portland in the management of garden real estate, including implementation of capital improvements and maintenance.  Lead successful fundraising efforts to grow the organization.  Establish strategic and programmatic direction for the organization and provide supervision and guidance for the staff.
Qualifications:The ideal candidate will possess the following attributes: • A passion for and strong record of successful fundraising, with an understanding of what constitutes a comprehensive fund development program; • Proven skill at diversifying and maximizing an organization’s revenue stream; • The ability to build donor support in a growing non-profit organization; • Non-profit management experience including financial and personnel management and basic knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles; • Excellent communication, public speaking, and media skills; • Skill in strategic and organizational planning; • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; and • Love of gardening/gardens, horticulture knowledge and/or experience with botanical garden, arboretum or related program would be considered a plus, but is not required. In addition, qualified candidates will exhibit a drive to achieve results through partnerships and creative collaborations, and the successful candidate will view the chance to lead Leach Botanical Garden to the next level as an exciting opportunity.
