THE ORGANIZATION

Chess for Success, founded in 1992, helps children in low-income schools develop skills necessary for success in school and life through learning and playing chess.

Chess for Success fulfills its mission and vision by providing after-school chess programs in elementary and middle schools. The Chess for Success State Tournament serves children throughout Oregon in 24 regional tournaments and the state championship tournament.

The Chess for Success office is fast-paced, entrepreneurial and detail-oriented with a strong commitment to relationship-building, fund raising and serving the needs of the community through our after-school programs and tournaments.

THE POSITION

The Program Operations Director maintains the presence of Chess for Success to donors, board of directors, principals, teachers, coaches, volunteers and the public through telephone, written correspondence, and electronic media. The individual works collaboratively with the Executive Director, and other members of the organization, to manage the after-school and tournament programs; maintain databases and the website; and participate in fund raising campaigns.

Required Skills and Abilities:Key responsibilities include the following (not necessarily in priority order): *Develop and maintain procedure manuals for all Chess for Success programs and functions *Manage administrative functions, including accounting, supplies, vendors and the phone system *Manage the after-school and tournament programs, including data tracking and management *Manage volunteer recruitment, training, placement, support, and recognition *Manage the Chess for Success Website, and Extranet *Provide assistance to the Executive Director, Development and Communications Director, and Program Managers *Assist with other Chess for Success projects as assigned
Qualifications:A minimum of five years experience in a comparable organization is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate must have advanced Microsoft Office Professional Suite skills, Website editing skills and accounting experience. The ideal candidate needs to have superior organizational skills, excellent attention-to-detail, and be able to oversee multiple projects simultaneously. This position interfaces extensively with the public and requires a friendly and diplomatic persona. Excellent judgment in interpersonal interactions and the ability to manage confidential information are crucial. In addition, the ability to coordinate social events and other organization business with finesse and refinement is important. The Program Operations Director should be able to communicate, both orally and in writing, with an outstanding level of skill. Proficiency in formatting and proofing internal and external documents is critical. The ability to establish effective communications and working relationships with Chess for Success staff, coaches, principals and the general public is important. The ideal candidate will have experience in electronic document management and schedule management and will be accustomed to working in a fluid, fast-paced environment. The Program Operations Director will be actively involved in fulfilling the mission of the organization and its goals and will be a self-starter who is comfortable juggling multiple projects simultaneously. The selected candidate will possess a genuine passion for and interest in the mission of Chess for Success.
