position summary:

The CEO is responsible for implementing the mission and strategic vision of the organization through fundraising efforts, staff, volunteer and donor recruitment and program development. The CEO works closely with the Board of Directors, major donors and strategic partners. The CEO must be willing to travel to Tanzania at least annually, travel by bus and be able to work effectively with Tanzanian staff, government officials and villagers. The ideal candidate is someone who has traveled to Africa and has an appreciation for the plight of Africa’s most vulnerable children. Required Skills and Abilities:Responsibilities include: Management/Organizational Development – Listen for, observe, understand, internalize and practice Africa Bridge’s values. • Oversee day-to-day activities of all functional areas of the organization. • Ensure compliance with grant and contract obligations, federal and state regulations. • Direct the development, implementation, evaluation and improvement efforts of programs and procedures involving the staff and board members. • Update all policies and systems to handle new levels of activity. • Participate in every series of Future Search meetings. • Ensure that there are simple grass roots measurements for continuous improvement that meet the needs of clients, partners, staff and donors. Human Resources – Lead the organization, its staff and constituents by example. • Hire, manage, supervise, evaluate and terminate US office and Tanzanian staff. • Consult with the Tanzania Program Manager on employee issues, staff recruitment and office management. • Supervise and evaluate the effectiveness of the Tanzania Program Manager. • Hire a Development Director who will execute financial plans under your direction. • Oversee, lead and inspire staff to perform to their maximum potential in a supportive, efficient and congenial work environment. • Ensure appropriate personnel policies for the management of staff. • Hire, orient and integrate new staff and contractors to build the capacity for expansion. • Guide staff in the management of volunteers. • Create an environment of continuous improvement through evaluation feedback loops and professional development for all staff. • Supervise contract negotiations for consulting staff and outside services and regularly monitor their effectiveness and performance. Financial Management – Stay humble and remain mission driven in the face of increased incomes and influence. • Oversee the development and approval of the annual budget with the Treasurer and Chair of the Board to ensure implementation of the organization’s strategy. • Monitor, measure and actively manage the organizations monthly performance against budgets and financial polices to ensure fiscal health. • Understand, influence and embrace the income growth strategies and plans developed to date. • Develop a three year operating plan to scale up efforts to reach more vulnerable children with a five time expansion. • Propose strategies, plans, staffing structures and proposals for growth to the board that benefit the organization. • Maintain security of donor, program and financial information. Fundraising – allow others the opportunity to experience global giving while changing children’s lives in Tanzania. • Oversee the development and implementation of an annual fundraising plan, communications and special events. • Embolden our grant application process by developing proposals for foundation and grant support and corporate sponsorship agreements in collaboration with the Development Director. • Launch, guide and oversee the implementation and maintenance of This is My Village fundraising efforts with staff support and training. • Create and maintain an atmosphere where new ideas, efforts and methods for raising financial support and recruiting new donors are encouraged and sustained. • Strategize to optimize the ratio of funding from foundations & corporations, individual donors and village sponsorships. • Maintain current donor base and attract new donors. • Serve as a key generator for names of potential major donors in partnership with the board’s Fundraising Committee. • Organize the involvement of board, staff and volunteers in fundraising endeavors. • Work closely with board committees to manage stakeholder relationships while working to achieve the organization’s annual goals. Public Relations, Communication and Marketing – Position Africa Bridge in the mind of key stakeholders to be a leading provider of sustainable programs and hope for Tanzania’s most vulnerable children. • Develop, maintain and deliver assorted public presentations to encourage community groups, service clubs, school children and potential donors to financially and materially support Africa Bridge. • Work closely with the board to develop and execute marketing and communication plans that support the fundraising and prominent objectives of the board’s strategic goals. • Supervise the development and maintenance of a web presence for community education and donor recruitment/retention. • Encourage and guide staff to maintain a strong virtual presence through diverse Internet applications such as social networking, Café Give, the Africa Bridge website and other pathways as developed. • Ensure that appropriate and up-to-date materials such as brochures, newsletters, postcards and flyers are available to and used by staff, volunteers and board members in sharing information on Africa Bridge. Board Functions – Support and cultivate board volunteers in their efforts to sustain program quality, development, expansion and replication. • Actively work with the board to expand board membership through the recruitment of successful community leaders with diverse educational, career, non-profit and business backgrounds. • Seek ways to educate, develop and retain an influential and high performing board team. • Actively work with board members to help support and develop strong, effective policy and fundraising leadership for the organization.
Qualifications:The CEO Must Have • At least two years experience in an upper level management position in a 501(c) 3 non-profit or non-governmental organization (NGO) and at least five years total experience in business or NGO management. • A leadership style that supports a climate of compassionate listening, empowering others, sensitivity to differences, progressive learning, mutual respect and collaboration. • Experience with program design and implementation, project development and staff management. • Success at building and maintaining mutually beneficial partnerships. • Familiarity with technology and social networking as a strategic advantage. • Excellent oral, written and computer communication skills. • Admirable interpersonal skills. • Strong desires and instinct for working with volunteers. • Demonstrate commitment to Africa Bridge’s mission.
