position summary:

The Urban League is seeking a highly motivated and energetic organizer to work with African American and other community residents to influence public policy and increase participation in decision-making on the issues of health equity, health reform and culturally targeted health care delivery, prevention and wellness.

The Urban League aims to eliminate health disparities faced by African Americans in Portland and the State. The Health Equity Organizer will work to maximize the participation of a community that is usually under-represented in policy and decision-making.

The Health Equity Organizer will be responsible developing and implementing campaigns and outreach strategies, develop volunteers, activists and leaders, organize community meetings, develop and present trainings on health equity issues and leadership development. They will work with legislators, elected officials, coalitions, service providers and work with Urban League staff on legislative policy.

Salary / Pay Rate:$14.00 - $16.00 per hour depending on experience. Benefits after 90 days.
Required Skills and Abilities:Candidates must have volunteer or paid organizing experience. Skills required include excellent written and verbal communication skills; proficiency at word processing, email, and web basics and a commitment to social and economic justice work which empowers communities. Successful candidates will also have: Ability to facilitate trainings and workshops; Ability to work with diverse community organizations and political offices; Understanding of the social determinates of health and racial equity; Understanding of legislative process and social policy; Capacity to explain complex information and issues simply.
Qualifications:A Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) or at least 3-5 years of experience in the field. Past volunteer or paid organizing experience considered.
