position summary:

OMSI is seeking 6 Camp Cook positions scheduled to work February through November. The Camp Cook position is responsible for cooking for OMSI Science Camps’ program participants and staff during the programming season. This position must communicate efficiently with other cooks, program coordinator, science camps director, food distributors, maintenance personnel and instructors, work with food vendors to place kitchen orders, plan nutritious menus (including possible specialty menus) for campers and camp staff, prepare and cook planned menus for campers and camp staff, prepare portable meals for offsite events as needed, maintain Food Handler’s Certificate food handling standards in kitchen and pantries, and responsible for washing kitchen laundry.

This position often involves extended hours and days worked, meets ACA time off standards (2 hours off duty per day and at least 24 hours off each 2 weeks in blocks of at least 12 hours), and room and board is provided during programs.

The ideal candidate will have ability to follow recipes and improvise when necessary, experience in developing meals that are nutritious and well balanced, experience in budgeting, logistics and negotiating, knowledge of specialty diet menus (i.e. vegetarian, wheat allergies, etc.), experience in menu planning and preparation of specialty diet menus, experience in food presentation, and 3 months prior experience cooking for camps, schools or other large groups.

Candidate must have Oregon State Food Handler’s License and pass pre-employment and/or pre-duty checks, such as criminal background check, fingerprinting, reference checks, and American Camp Association (ACA) background checks (& on annual basis). It is preferred candidate enjoy living in a group environment and enjoy working with all ages, children to adults, be comfortable in a non-smoking working and living environment, and have a Valid Drivers. If valid driver’s license is applicable, candidate must pass the requirements in the MVR Policy including passing Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check and Alcohol & Drug Test for non-CDL Drivers Policy, including pre-duty drug test. Salary / Pay Rate:Pay: $6.88 - $10.63 per hour*
