All workshops are held at NW Documentary: 115 SW Ash Street, Suite 620, Except Final Cut Pro: Intro to Editing, which will be held at MacForce: 100 SE Salmon Street.

D.I.Y Documentary $350 Tuesdays, Sep. 23-Dec. 2 (10 sessions)/ No Class Nov. 25 7:00-9:00pm

Under the tutelage of our award-winning instructors, you'll learn each stage of production first-hand: from story ideas and proposals to camera work, interviews, and then to writing and editing compelling stories. This workshop is intended for first-time and intermediate filmmakers and includes the Intro to Editing Workshop. Final projects will be screened at McMenamin’s Mission Theater on December 12.

Final Cut Pro: Intro to Editing $100 Monday & Tuesday, Nov. 3, 4 6:00-8:00pm

MacForce collaborates with NW Doc for two nights of digital editing adventures. This seminar occurs during week 7 of the 10- week workshop, but is also open to filmmakers looking to refresh their editing skills. We focus on Final Cut Pro, the industry standard in non-linear editing.

Documentary: Past and Present $200 Thursdays, Sep. 25-Dec. 4 (10 sessions) 7:00-10:00pm

This screening and lecture series will explore the rich history of documentary film, from the earliest silent shorts, to todays festival favorites. Come experience a diverse selection of films including experimental, personal narrative, broadcast doc, and cinéma vérité. Immerse yourself in the history and language of non-fiction filmmaking.

Take 2: Making Your Next Documentary $250 Wednesdays, Sep. 24 - Dec. 3 (10 sessions)/ No Class Nov. 26 7:00-9:00pm

Repeat the steps of our popular 10-week workshop in new teams with new projects. Sharpen your directing, shooting, sound recording, editing, and re-editing skills with more attention to the craft and art of documentary filmmaking. Topics also include legal, ethical, and artistic issues in making documentaries. Final projects will be screened on December 12th at McMenamin’s Mission Theater.

Live Action! Shooting Performance, Events, and Concerts $95, $60 optional equipment rental fee Mondays, Sep. 29, Oct. 6 (2 sessions) 7:00-9:00pm

Theres no second take in shooting live! Shooting live action is one of the hardest challenges since lighting, sound, and action are rarely in the filmmakers control. This workshop will offer practical tips, proven techniques, and the opportunity to gain hands-on practice. The class will form small production teams and go on assignment, returning to share footage, experiences and feedback.

Film Fests: What to Know Before You Go $45 Monday, Nov. 10 6:30-9:30pm

This evening session includes all of our insight from years of experience touring independent film festivals. From festival submissions, award entries, and PR to screening logistics, travel arrangements and every other detail, we will walk you through the complete process. Save a lot of time and money learning these helpful tips before setting out on the daunting festival circuit.

The Big Bad (Small) Budget $45 Monday, Oct. 20 6:30-9:30pm

In this intensive workshop, you will discuss the language, tone, and strategy surrounding a budget, how to plan and map out a production that has not begun, and prepare a preliminary budget for all phases of the film. We will workshop your budgets with the group and discuss revisions, fundraising options, grant proposals, and fiscal sponsorship.

Family Scrapbook $200, All Equipment Included Saturday & Sunday Nov. 15, 16 10:00-4:00pm

This new class is for folks starting out, or for those with experience, whod like to use digital documentary tools and technique to tell simple, short family stories. Bring photos, footage, letters, and music to life as we combine them to create our own original and creative personal projects. Interested in a workshop?
