Big Brothers Big Sisters' mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with measurable impact. Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest operates throughout metropolitan Portland and Southwest Washington. Through a clear focus on strategic priorities, the agency grew from serving 50 children in 2002 to serving 2,371 children in 2007, making it the largest mentoring program in Oregon and the largest Big Brothers Big Sisters agency on the West Coast. During the same time period, the agency has successfully grown revenues from $130,000 to $3,000,000 while launching programs for high risk children, including children of incarcerated parents, foster children, children in Title I schools, and Latino, African American and Native American children. The agency boasts a high-profile, committed board of directors, an experienced and mission-driven workforce and strong community partnerships.

 

The Grant Writer reports to the Chief Development Officer and is responsible for implementing the agency's major grants program, including composing grant proposals, reports, and correspondence, and supporting major donor development.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

·        Compose proposals, reports, and other correspondence for grantors and major donors 

·        Prepare standard grant proposal and report attachments

·        Ensure proposals/reports are compiled, packaged and mailed in timely and quality manner

·        Help create and maintain grant/major gift revenue tracking chart

·        Develop and maintain on-line Grant Resource Center and provide “small grant” coaching to field managers as needed

·        Help compile financial data for strategic planning, audits, proposals, and reports as needed

·        Work with development staff to identify and research grant and major donor prospects

 

Secondary Responsibilities:

·        Track activities for pending and prospective major donors in Raiser’s Edge

·        Scan local print media for potential grant/major gift opportunities

·        Represent Big Brothers Big Sisters with current and potential major donors as appropriate 

·        Provide writing support for other projects as needed 

  

Knowledge and Skills: 

·        Exceptional written communication skills

·        Strong project management skills

·        Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

·        Ability to work independently and collaboratively

·        Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office products

·        Experience with desktop publishing and design a plus

 

Education and Work Experience:

·        Bachelor’s degree

·        At least 2 years’ professional writing experience, including significant involvement in writing grant proposals and reports

 

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and/or sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
