Volunteers needed to campaign against Measure 61

Get involved this election season! The campaign against Measure 61 needs your time and energy.

Partnership for Safety and Justice needs your help calling registered voters in support of Measure 57 and against Measure 61. We’re calling Sundays from 5:00 – 7:30 and Monday – Thursday from 6:00 – 8:30. Email Caylor, [email protected] or call 503-335-8449 for more information and to schedule a night to call.

We’re asking the public to vote no on Measure 61.

If passed, Measure 61 will create new mandatory minimum sentences for certain drug and property crimes. The measure will result in building at least two new prisons at a cost to Oregon taxpayers of over $1 billion dollars. The measure does nothing to address addiction, the root cause of drug and many property crimes, and simply focuses on warehousing people and draining Oregon’s general fund of resources that are needed for the Oregon Health Plan, community colleges, and drug and alcohol treatment.

We’re also asking the public to vote yes on Measure 57.  Measure 57 is an alternative to Measure 61. The measure does lengthen some sentences, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach that takes away a judge and jury’s ability to decide a sentence. Measure 57 costs less than half of Measure 61, and allocates $40 million to drug and alcohol treatment to address the root causes of drug and property crime.

Partnership for Safety and Justice works on reforming criminal justice policy in Oregon. We understand that as more and more of our limited state resources go to build and operate prisons, fewer and fewer funds are available for cost-effective programs that could prevent crime and create safe communities, programs like community-based drug and alcohol treatment, re-entry programs, GED programs, and youth diversion programs.
