ARE YOU A WOMAN WITH A PHYSICAL DISABILITY WHO ALSO EXPERIENCES DEPRESSION?  IF SO YOU MAY BE ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN A RESEARCH STUDY      

PURPOSE:  The purpose of the study is to test a peer-implemented group therapy program designed to meet the specific needs of women with physical disabilities who require some form of accommodation.

ELIGIBILITY:   You may be eligible if you:   1) have a physical disability requiring some form of accommodation   2) are 18 years of age or older   3) have no history of psychosis or cognitive disability   4) are not receiving developmental disability services   5) are not actively suicidal   6) are not currently receiving psychotherapy from another source   7) have not recently initiated or discontinued an antidepressant medication within 6 weeks.      

PARTICIPATION:  Should you choose to participate you will be randomly assigned to a group that will receive therapy first or to a comparison group. Random assignment means you will be assigned to a group purely on chance. The comparison group will participate in the study for a longer period of time, be asked to complete more study interviews, and will not receive the group therapy program until the initial therapy groups have been completed, however, the comparison group will eventually receive the group therapy. Study interviews will include both open ended questions in a group setting as well as completion of structured questionnaires privately. Study participation will not exceed a period of ten months. All study interviews and therapy sessions will be completed in Eugene or Portland, Oregon.
