Green Cities Associate, Cascade Land Conservancy Americorps Internships

Green Cities Associate, Cascade Land Conservancy

Seattle, WA

The Green Cities program is based on a long-term 20 year approach to restoring our regions' urban forested parklands and natural areas. The program is currently working in partnership with the cities of Seattle, Tacoma, Kirkland and Redmond along with thousands of volunteers, community groups, and other non-profit organizations.

The primary goals of the program are to build awareness of the existing problems in our forested parklands; create a repeatable model for the restoration and stewardship of our forested parklands; increase community capacity and build civic pride through education and volunteerism; promote scientific restoration to ensure long-term ecological sustainability; preserve our region's natural landscapes by making cities attractive, vibrant and livable; improve watershed health through riparian and upland restoration; provide environmental and service learning opportunities for school children and their families; and to sustain healthy public parklands for future generations.

Within these goals, the AmeriCorps Interns will work primarily to enhance public lands, increase awareness of environmental issues and concepts and increase volunteer involvement in environmental and educational issues. These efforts will protect the important Pacific Northwest legacy of beautiful parks and vibrant communities for generations to come.

Steward Program Associate, Cascade Land Conservancy

Seattle, WA

A core duty for the AmeriCorps Stewardship Program Associates will be to organize and facilitate volunteer work parties. Work parties take place throughout the year, often on Saturdays, and usually about twice a month. Typical work parties will focus on controlling invasive plant species; replanting with appropriate native vegetation; installing irrigation and weed control systems; removing trash and unwanted debris; constructing and placing wildlife nest boxes; and general site maintenance and monitoring. The Stewardship Program Associates will also have an opportunity to assist, and potentially take the lead, in the development and implementation of new resource conservation and place-based education programs. Specific duties will include conducting research on various ecological processes and restoration techniques; conducting outreach to area schools, particularly those with community service requirements; locating existing watershed education curriculums and modifying them to fit our project sites; and leading outdoor education programs for school groups, volunteer teams and community members of all ages.
