About Speech and Debate:

This added attraction to the 2008-2009 season follows three young misfits in a Salem, Oregon classroom as they discover that they are linked by a sex scandal that has rocked their town. It's an IM and text messaging world, where grown-up ideas mix with childish will, high school ambitions and teenaged bravado. With a nod to musical comedy - including a musical version of "The Crucible" - Karam takes a peek at what, if anything, it means to be an adult.

About the discussion:

Jerald Block, MD (Discussant) is a psychiatrist in Portland, an advanced psychoanalytic candidate, and an Affiliate Assistant Professor at OHSU. He is an international expert on the pathological use of technology and has published widely on the topic. Dr. Block is also widely known for his clinical research into the psychology of school shooters.

Kathleen McLaughlin, LCSW, PhD (Discussant) is a psychoanalyst and psychotherapist in private practice in Portland. Previously she was an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Lewis and Clark College for 17 years. Dr. McLaughlin is a well known lecturer on the intersection between psychology and spirituality; she has published internationally on this topic.

Megan Miller (Moderator; Education and Outreach Collaborator) has been teaching for the past 9 years and is currently the English Department Head at North Marion High School. She has a Masters of English Education from the University of Minnesota, and is finishing a degree in Theatre. This is Megan's second season with Artists Rep's Education and Outreach Department where she creates educational resource guides each season in addition to moderating post-show and panel discussions for many of Artists Rep's productions.

Dr. Block and Dr. McLaughlin are participating in this discussion on behalf of the Oregon Psychoanalytic Center, which is dedicated to advancing the vitality and enduring value of psychoanalysis in Oregon. Artists Repertory Theatre is pleased to partner with OPC to provide this discussion for our audiences.
