Senior Program Activity Coordinator

Founded in 1930, Friendly House, Inc. is a private, not-for-profit neighborhood center located in Northwest Portland.  Friendly House Senior Program is one of five Friendly House programs. It is the mission of the senior program to provide high quality services, advocacy, and activities for seniors who are living independently in Northwest Portland.  We help to enhance their quality of life and enable them to remain living in their own homes.  A job in the Friendly House Senior Program as an Activity Coordinator provides excellent experience for those preparing for a career in Event Planning, Social Work, Anti-poverty work or Psychology.

SCOPE OF THE POSITION

Desirable candidates for the Activity Coordinator position bring an understanding of the strengths and challenges of seniors, community building skills, and experience working with diverse populations. This is a 15-hour/week position and the candidate who fills it will be responsible for the development and implementation of activities (recreational, educational, socialization) for seniors at Friendly House Community Center, and in the community. S/he will coordinate activities with local partners and work as part of the Senior Program team.

Essential Functions

Development, coordination and implementation of activities that respond to the interests of seniors living in Northwest Portland. Schedule must contain a balance of social, educational, recreational, and wellness activities for seniors on a continuum of well to frail. Create, implement, and evaluate plan to market Senior Program and Community Center activities to Northwest Portland seniors. Work with Volunteer Coordinator to recruit/screen activity leaders and with program director for contract instructors.  Supervise program volunteers and contract instructors. Provide material input for monthly newsletter in a timely manner. Coordinate volunteers to mail/distribute newsletter. Coordinate with Community Center staff to update database. Produce reports or data for reports as requested. Contribute toward Friendly House’s goal of building community

Secondary Responsibilities

·        Participate in agency advocacy efforts on behalf of the elder-population.

Participate in program and agency special events (Harvest Dinner, auction, etc.). Attend activities if time allows. Share individual talents, skills and knowledge in providing culturally appropriate service delivery to the following populations: Limited English Proficiency, GLBTQI and rural seniors.

Qualifications

Knowledge of needs, abilities, and interests of senior population Good communication skills, both oral and written Ability to work well with a variety of people Familiarity with community resources Computer/data base skills Willingness to do “cold calling” for in-kind and monetary contributions  Efficient use of time

Interpersonal Contacts

The Activity Coordinator necessarily interacts with other Senior Program, Community Center and other agency staff, seniors, and formal/informal community partners including Northwest Portland Ministries staff.

Job Conditions

This job is preformed in a supportive office environment, in the community center, and in the community. The Senior Program office is a shared space divided by partitions with a central meeting space.

Salary is $10.99 – 11.33 per hour, depending on experience.  Health benefits, paid vacation and sick leave.  Staff training budget and paid training time.  A membership in the Friendly House Community Center is given to all Friendly House staff members.
