Multnomah County Director Job Description


The primary functions of the Multnomah County Director are to provide leadership and direction and engage the community in our mentoring programs based in Multnomah County. The Director will be responsible for the supervision of the on site staff, volunteers, and interns. This position will work collaboratively with the community relations staff, fund development staff, and program supervisors to ensure high quality program outcomes and adequate resources to achieve those outcomes. This is a high performance position requiring the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast paced, dynamic work environment.


1.       A master’s degree in human services, public administration, or related field is preferred. A bachelor’s degree with eight years of work experience may be considered as a substitute.

2.       Two or more years successful experience supervising full-time staff and volunteers. Demonstrated leadership qualities, ability to inspire staff and nurture a team-oriented work culture. Duties and Responsibilities

1.       Monitor the functioning and quality of work produced by the programs staff as assigned.  Provide supervision and training as indicated.

2.       Continuously assess program(s) quality, effectiveness and efficiency, propose changes and ensure timely implementation for approved program changes. Conduct, or support in the facilitation of, regular file audits to ensure completeness and quality work/documentation.

3.       Provide match support and enrollment services on an as needed basis, which may include the supervision of matches and the completion of volunteer, and parent/child intakes and match introductions.  Work in partnership with program supervisors to ensure coverage of vacant position responsibilities. 

4.       Oversee risk management in the program department including compliance with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America standards and ensure that procedures are in line with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America service delivery model.  Communicate fully with VP of Programs regarding any concerns of risk.

5.       Work with the Chief Development Officer and VP of Community Relations to create community development plan to achieve agreed upon goals. Assist the CEO and Program/Development Directors with special projects as needed.

6.       Manage community development plan and report progress monthly.  Monitor budget compliance for service area.  

7.       Generate 25% of site budget through community events, Bowl for Kids’ Sake, the annual luncheon, and the development and writing of grant proposals and reports. 

8.       Develop relationships with businesses, high schools, religious groups, community groups, and other potential sources of volunteer mentors. Develop relationships with elementary schools, middle schools, community groups, and other sources of youth participants.

9.       Develop and engage an Ambassador Board to help lead and support community development activities.

10.   Cultivate, secure, and acknowledge community partners in accordance with agency values and strategic plan.  Oversee the submission of volunteer award nominations.

11.   Create sustainable corporate partnerships in accordance with the Big Brother Big Sister brand and volunteer options. Track constituent information.

12.   Serve as a member of the organization’s management team.

13.   Monitor program / grant compliance; submit reports as required and assigned.

14.   Attend regional or national conferences for as necessary or beneficial to the agency.

15.   Work in collaboration with Office Manager to maintain general operations of the office (e.g. computer systems, facility needs, etc).
