Development Specialist

Dynamic statewide non-profit is seeking a team-oriented Development Specialist to be a part of the successful SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) early literacy program. Must have a passionate commitment to helping Oregon’s children read.

Position Title: Development Specialist

Position Summary: This position is responsible for coordinating SMART’s direct response program, supporting various development and marketing initiatives, packaging grant proposals and reports, assisting with event and promotions planning and implementation, and providing general administrative support for the Development/Marketing team. In addition, the Development Specialist oversees the organization and storage of all development records and materials.

Reports To: Development Director

DIRECT RESPONSE RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Create direct response calendar and action item timeline. • Work with vendors (direct response consultant, printer, mailhouse, list supplier, etc.) to ensure all lists, material orders and service requests are scheduled in time to meet drop dates. • Coordinate with staff to ensure all key elements (letters lists, etc.) are created, reviewed, and approved in time to meet drop dates. • Collaborate with the Development/Marketing Director and Marketing/PR Manager to create effective direct response budget, strategies and material designs. • Analyze direct response results and trends to determine how the program should be modified for increased effectiveness.

DEVELOPMENT/MARKETING RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Collaborate with the Development/Marketing Team to create aesthetic and effective printed materials, fact sheets, etc. Serve as the point person for most vendors. • Help plan and implement various development and marketing events and promotions. • Serve as the eNewsletter liaison for all field offices. • Work with the Development/Marketing Team to update the website, as appropriate.

ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Package and mail grant proposals and reports with appropriate attachments. • Maintain, update, and stock materials in on-line and hard copy literature bin and folders. • Provide administrative support for the Board’s Development and Marketing/PR Committees, including meeting announcements, note-taking, etc. • Maintain Development files, printed material archives, direct mail archives, etc. • Update donor records in RE as requested by the Development/Marketing Director. • Document and distribute Development/Marketing team meeting notes and action items. • Create and/or prepare reports and templates as appropriate for the Development/Marketing team.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

• Strong project management skills • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail • Exceptional written communication skills • Ability to work independently and with a team • Strong strategic thinking skills and creativity • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office products • Experience with direct mail and desktop publishing a plus • A sense of service and commitment to SMART’s mission

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

• Bachelor’s degree • At least 2 years’ experience working in nonprofit development/marketing

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and/or sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
