Snowboard and Volunteer with Youth!

SOS Outreach is a non-profit organization, with programs across the country. We aim to build character and self-esteem in youth through snowsports and the SOS curriculum.

Learn to Ride is SOS's fundamental youth program. It's a resilience-based outdoor mountain adventure experience designed for youth with risk factors in their lives. Each participant is provided with five days of professional snowboard instruction, rental equipment, lift tickets and clothing. Utilizing the fast learning curve and "cool factors" of snowboarding, students are able to overcome fears, reach new goals and discover new possibilities.

What distinguishes this program from any other on-hill lesson is the SOS curriculum that promotes self-image,positive relationships, social competencies and positive values. Each of the five days of the Learn to Ride (LTR) program focuses on one of five values. Each morning begins with a discussion about the core value for the day, and the activities of the day elicit examples of that value in action. Youth are encouraged by SOS adults to use the core values they have learned everyday they are on the hill. In addition, SOS adults encourage the students to look for ways these values affect their everyday decisions. The culmination of the five day program is a graduation ceremony where each student acknowledges a strength in each of his/her group members and SOS adults. In turn, each SOS adult (instructors, volunteers, counselors and field coordinators) acknowledges strengths in the youth they have worked with. Using these methods SOS helps students turn risk into resilience.

As a Volunteer in the Learn to Ride Program, you have the unique opportunity to reach out to the kids in a different way than the Instructor or the Youth Agency Coordinator.

If you have any questions, I'd be happy to help you out! I have scheduled a volunteer orientation on Thursday, November 20, at 6:00 pm (location TBA). If you are able to attend, please let me know and I will email you the location. Thank you!

Spread the Love,
