Mentor Coordinator - Student Mentors Into Latino Excellence/Oregon Leadership Institute - Sociology

Sociology Student Mentors Into Latino Excellence/Oregon Leadership Institute (S.M.I.L.E./OLI) invites applications for two (0.8-1.0 FTE) Mentor Coordinator positions to begin October 2008. 

Mentor Coordinators will have shared responsibility for delivering an after-school mentoring program for Latino/Hispanic middle and high school students in Portland Public Schools. Each Mentor coordinator will have primary responsibility for supporting and supervising volunteer high school mentors and middle school mentees in a school cluster (one high school and three middle schools). 

Position Requirements

The successful applicant will be expected to have: 

At least two years experience with after-school programs at the junior high school or high school level (preferably in Portland), at least one year experience working in youth mentoring, and a demonstrated and strong understanding of practices that make for successful youth mentoring. 

Demonstrated skill doing successful outreach with Latino/Hispanic families, strong bilingual skills (English and Spanish), and ability to work effectively with school principals, school staff, teachers, and after school programs.

Ability to take initiative and prioritize tasks, good time-management, problem-prevention, and problem-solving skills.

Good record keeping skills, some familiarity with collection of demographic and other data, skill preparing organized brief reports.

Proficiency using computers and a comfortable mastery of word-processing, spreadsheet, and database programs.

A valid driver’s license and a criminal background check. At least a Bachelor’s degree

Compensation $34,000-36,000 for full-time 12-month rate (depending on qualifications), plus an excellent benefits package including fully paid healthcare; a generous retirement package; and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or dependent at any of the Oregon University System schools.
