POSITION OVERVIEW
Basic Rights Oregon seeks to fill two temporary, part-time Field Organizer positions beginning in mid-January and ending in late June, 2009. One organizer will be based in BRO’s Portland office and report to the Portland Metro Field Organizer. The other organizer will be based in BRO’s Eugene office and report to the Regional Director.

Field Organizers are primarily responsible for recruiting and training volunteers; assisting in the planning and execution of BRO’s Day of Action; and supporting the organization’s legislative campaign. Field Organizers are members of a team implementing a comprehensive organizing program that develops leaders, engages allies and activates broad grassroots support for BRO’s political goals through both legislative and electoral cycles.

PORTLAND FIELD ORGANIZER RESPONSIBILITIES

- Recruit, mobilize, train and motivate a large and diverse pool of volunteer activists and leaders to carry out the campaigns, programs and educational activities of the organization
- Maintain administrative systems necessary to track volunteer participation
- Engage community organizations in BRO’s legislative campaign
- Coordinate phone banks, constituent contact to elected officials, and direct action; assist in coordination of lobby days
- Travel to Salem and other communities to mobilize volunteers
- Coordinate logistics and transportation for activities at the State Capitol
- Prepare written weekly and quarterly work plans and progress reports
- Perform other duties as assigned

EUGENE FIELD ORGANIZER RESPONSIBILITIES

- Recruit, mobilize, train and motivate a large and diverse pool of volunteer activists and leaders to carry out the campaigns, programs and educational activities of the organization
- Maintain administrative systems necessary to track volunteer participation
- Engage allies and coalition partners in BRO’s legislative campaign
- Coordinate phone banks
- Coordinate transportation of activists from Southern and Central Oregon to the State Capitol in Salem
- Travel to Corvallis and other communities to mobilize volunteers
- Give short presentations to high school Gay Straight Alliances and college and community groups
- Contact existing and potential volunteers in rural areas and small communities
- Prepare written weekly and quarterly work plans and progress reports
- Perform other duties as assigned

Salary / Pay Rate:Hourly wage commensurate with experience
Qualifications:Previous student, issue, electoral, community or labor organizing experience. Demonstrated experience in volunteer recruitment and management. Commitment to social justice, especially to ending homophobia and transphobia. Demonstrated ability to problem solve and work as part of a fast-paced team; and to prioritize and manage a variety of projects simultaneously. Commitment to building a multi-racial team; experience working in multi-racial environments. Comfortable speaking to small and large groups. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated computer literacy, especially with Microsoft Word and Excel. Valid driver’s license. Ability to work evenings and weekends.
