Research Associate 1 Year Position (.75 FTE, $26,000)

Overview of our program and current project: Friends of the Children pairs vulnerable children with professional mentors who provide support and guidance from kindergarten through 12th grade. The National Office assists Friends of the Children chapters around the country in serving children in seven communities across the United States. The National Office of Friends of the Children is currently developing a national database system for record keeping and analysis of program data in all chapters. A nationwide database system will allow us to evaluate specific program components and will improve the program services we provide to our children by providing a means through which we can track each child’s progress. This will enable us to measure the effectiveness of program techniques and strategies used in all chapters and continually improve our program model.

Primary Duties: • Work with the national staff to research, develop, refine and document procedures to transform/convert existing data into the new database system • Test the procedures and participate in the process to determine the most efficient implementation • Understand the content and organization of existing data sets (some paper records, some computer data files) and assist in planning, documentation, and conversion of those data into the database system • Perform basic level of data entry, data editing/checking, data mapping

Knowledge and Expertise: • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills • Demonstrated organizational and time management, delegation and follow-up skills • Understanding of social science research methodology • Strong proficiency using Excel • Demonstrated experience with data collection and processes • MS Access &/or other standard relational database systems experience • Children or youth oriented social service programs, particularly among vulnerable populations • Attention to detail, can work accurately and efficiently with detailed information and procedures • Maintain utmost confidentiality of information per Friends requirements

Education Required and/or Experience Preferred:

Master’s degree in relevant field preferred or previous experience with data management
