The mission of Chess for Success (CFS) is to help children develop the skills necessary for success in school and life by learning chess. CFS is not a chess program; it is an educational program that uses chess to teach children high-level thinking and social skills. Activities are managed by a paid coach, a teacher at the school, who provides chess instruction after school. We are currently serving 3200 children in 83 schools in 16 school districts in the neediest communities. 70% of students in our schools qualify for Free or Reduced lunch and the average percentage of minority students is 60%. In addition to the after-school program, we run the Chess for Success Regional and State Tournaments. This scholastic chess tournament has a 42 year history. Last year approximately 2000 young people in Oregon participated in 24 regional tournaments, and 550 players qualified to play in the finals held at the Oregon Convention Center.

Position Summary The Development Director maintains the profile of Chess for Success to donors, the board of directors, principals, teachers, coaches, volunteers and the public through personal visits, telephone contact, written correspondence and the Internet. S/he provides fundraising support through creating and executing the fundraising budget and timeline; encouraging donor stewardship; and coordinating marketing efforts.

Required Skills and Abilities:Responsibilities • Create and manage the fundraising strategy, timeline and budget • Work closely with the executive director and board of directors to execute the fundraising plan, including nurturing loyal individual and corporate donors • Research, identify, and cultivate new individual and corporate donors • Implement the direct-mail campaign • Create an online fundraising campaign • Coordinate special events including the annual auction • Manage the fundraising database • Oversee Web site content and marketing materials • Coordinate public relations publications such as the newsletter and fundraising brochure • Create and sustain a compelling and consistent voice for Chess for Success communications Additional Skills • Committed to the mission of Chess for Success • Professional attitude, sense of humor and fun • Ability to work under stressful situations • Self-motivated and willing to work independently • Enthusiastic and collaborative team player Requirements • Three years of fundraising as a development professional, including individual and corporate donor development • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects • Auction and event coordination experience • Familiarity with donor databases and other software • Demonstrated ability to work closely with board members and high-level donors • Strong oral and written communication that is compelling and accurate • Superior editing and attention to detail skills Other The duties and skills listed above are not intended to be all inclusive nor to limit duties that might reasonable be assigned.
