Internship Position with the Josiah Hill Clinic

Bilingual Community Outreach Intern

Duration:                  200 hours to be completed February-July 2009

                                    6-10 hours/week, over 1-2 days/week in office/community

Compensation:        $10-12/hr DOE

The Bilingual Community Outreach Intern is a contract position and thus will be responsible for her/his own taxes

 

About the Josiah Hill Clinic:

Josiah Hill III Clinic’s (JHC) mission is to protect children from environmental hazards and promote community action for healthy homes.  JHC is grassroots community-based organization that works in collaboration to create healthy and safe homes for Portland Metro area families.  The organization is unique in that it utilizes trained volunteers and community leaders to provide environmental health education, blood lead testing, and healthy home check-ups.  Learn more at www.jhillclinic.org

 

About the Internship:

The Bilingual Community Outreach Intern will assist the Program Coordinator and Outreach and Education Coordinator with our healthy homes project in the Centennial School District (east Portland around SE Division and 142nd).  Josiah Hill III Clinic’s programs assist families in identifying potential in-home health hazards and then link families with resources to address, or prevent, the hazards.  Health hazards found in and around our homes include lead, chemicals, mold and mildew-all of which can lead to or exacerbate health issues such as lead poisoning and asthma, especially for young children.  The intern will be responsible for providing bilingual outreach support to the Russian-speaking community in southeast Portland.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities Include:

·Russian interpretation and translation services (oral and written)

·Provide outreach support at school and community events

·Assist in the establishment of community partnerships within Russian-speaking and Orthodox communities

·Educate families about toxins found in and around our environment

·Educate community members about how to become involved with the organization

·Assist in developing culturally-appropriate materials for outreach and trainings

·Provide healthy home checkups

 

Qualifications:

·          Native or fluent Russian speaker

·          Knowledge of Eastern European/Orthodox communities

·          Embraces and enjoys diversity

·          Familiarity with home and environmental health issues a plus

·          Familiarity with southeast Portland and/or Centennial SD a plus
