Dr. Stephen Schneider, 2007 Nobel Peace Prize winner, renowned climatologist and professor at Stanford University will speak at the Portland Expo Center on March 27. Come join us at the next Portland Heart of Now, March 20-22. Heart of Now is a unique weekend long practice of presence with self and others. Heart of Now has been greatly loved by almost everyone who has attended. Some of the reasons are: Heart of Now is experiential, you'll spend a small amount of time listening to people from the front of the room, a moderate amount of time sharing, and a lot of time experiencing your presence in a set of exercises.

Woodblock printing workshop offered at The ReBuilding Center

Be the Change: Dine for Mercy Corps

Event Description: Young's Columbia and supporting sponsors invite you to Be the Change on April 7th. Restaurants, bars and coffee shops throughout Oregon and Washington are teaming up for Be the Change. Order a latte, a meal or a pint at any participating establishment, and 25 percent of your bill will go to Mercy Corps' programs around the world and to support local entrepreneurs here in the Northwest.

Last year, a similar effort called Dine for Darfur raised over $64,000 for Mercy Corps' work, and brought thousands of people out of their homes to show support.

On Wednesday March 25 at 7:00pm, Tualatin Riverkeepers Citizen Action Committee will host a Friends Forum (not a Pub Talk) at Max's Fanno Creek Brew Pub, 12562 SW Main Street in Tigard.

Our featured talker at the pub will be Maria Cahill talking on Sustainable Principles for Land Development.

Oregon Entrepreneurs has had the trademark on the PubTalk name for quite some time---it's one of their regular monthly events. In order to avoid confusion, and respect their trademark we will no longer refer to our talks at the pub as "Pub Talks".

position summary:

Health Care for All-Oregon is seeking an organizer to coordinate volunteers and general membership during the 2009 state and federal legislative sessions. The organizer will work with HCAO to educate Oregonians on health care reforms and help them communicate their demands to legislators to create comprehensive policy changes.

Responsibilities: 1) Support and coordinate our on-going community programs to educate Oregonians as decisions are made throughout this session. This includes updating our member database, making personal contact with members to increase participation, and regular communication with ally groups to coordinate events. 2) Increase use of our web site and other low cost methods of publicizing advocacy events.

Salary / Pay Rate:$15-20 per hour, depending on experience

Grant Funds Available for Low-Income Empowerment and Community Change Organizations

Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) Grants fund grassroots community organizations who are focused on the systemic causes of poverty, and who address institutional change, not just individual change. People living in poverty must have the dominant voice in the organization - 50% of the board must be from the low-income community being served, and leadership development must be available to all low-income participants. We are accepting applications for our Spring Grants cycle. The application deadline is April 15th , 2009 .

We are looking for mentors who are willing to help Eastern European Youth.  Mentors will spend one and a half hours a week helping with homework and English, talking about school, life, and the youth’s future.

Help Plan the Wordstock Book Festival!

If you are a dedicated, talented and take-charge book nerd (or know someone who is), Wordstock needs you! We have several open positions that need to be filled on our all-volunteer Leadership Team. Become a Team Leader for Oregon Food Bank’s Learning Gardens!

The Oregon Food Bank Learning Gardens need enthusiastic volunteers to help lead small groups. On days when more than 10 people will be volunteering in the Learning Garden, Team Leaders will supervise groups of 5 – 10 people to accomplish specific garden projects. Projects may include planting, transplanting, composting, mulching, weeding, thinning, harvesting or other garden tasks as needed. Team Leaders attend a training in early April and commit to helping lead groups in the garden twice a month. There are opportunities at our NE Portland and Hillsboro gardens, and weekday and weekend times are available.
