Middle School Students Perform Mexican Ballet to Raise Money for Portland Day Laborers

The Sunnyside Environmental Middle School is hosting an event this Saturday, May 16, from 5pm-9pm at Sunnyside School(3421 SE Salmon)to benefit the Day Labor Hire Site. This event will feature performances by the Children’s Mexican Ballet Papalotl, live music, salsa dancing, poetry, delicious food, a raffle and more! Learn more about the Day Labor Hire Site and what we can do to help. The cost is $20-$10 sliding scale, $40 for families.

The event has been planned by students and members of the Day Labor Hire Site and is a celebration of culture and solidarity. Information, art, poetry, music will be provided by the day laborers, food prepared by the students and community members.

Rachmaninov Vespers concert - just $10!

Hear the Portland Symphonic Choir perform the gorgeous Rachmaninov Vespers, with soloists Scott Tuomi and Sherry Olson Saturday May 16 and Sunday, May 17 at St. Mary's Cathedral (NW 18th and Couch). Selected seats available for just $10! Sergei Rachmaninov's magnum opus, Vespers combines ancient Russian Orthodox chants and the living instrument of the human chorus in amazing ways.  Voices weave in and out of harmonies and tempos, sopranos soar to the skies and basses plunge to the depths, intense emotions surge and subside in one of the most thrilling a cappella works ever written. Call the Portland Symphonic Choir at 503-223-1217 between 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Thursday and Friday and ask for the "Sergei Special".

We are hosting an Oregon Take Action day in honor of Oregon’s 150th birthday. SOLV is organizing state wide events for groups and individuals to work throughout the region and state to make our communities a better and healthier place to live. Please contact SOLV at (http://www.solv.org/) in order to sign-up and to help out here at Tryon Creek State Natural Area. We will be removing invasive English ivy to protect our special, urban forest that provides fish and wildlife habitat as well as recreation and education activities for visitors.

Meet members of Daybreak Cohousing, a new community opening in Portland, OR in fall 2009 at Yetti's, a charming neighborhood wine bar down a few minutes' walk from Daybreak. Kids are welcome! The menu offers light fare and non-alcoholic drinks as well as wine and beer. The address is 1914 N. Killingsworth St. You can take the yellow line MAX to the Killingsworth station, then walk .2 miles west. The 35 Greeley bus stops at North Greeley and Killingsworth; then walk .4 miles east. The 72 Killingsworth route stops right by Yetti's at the intersection of Denver and North Killingsworth.

Portland has a wealth of amazing non-profit organizations working hard on important issues, and we want you to come join us for a parade along Mississippi in front of 10,000 spectators.

Cirque du Cycling, a Mississippi bike fair in support of the non-profit Self Enhancement Inc., is calling all non-profit organizations and bike clubs to come and represent by marching and pedaling in the nation's largest bike pride parade on June 13th. It's totally free and a great way to promote your cause.

Project YESS at Mt. Hood Community College

Lead a conservation crew consisting of 8 to 10 at-risk and low-income youth completing valuable natural resource-based projects. Typical projects include removal of non-native invasive plants, trail building & maintenance, tree planting, riparian/stream restoration projects, plant surveys, parks ground maintenance, and other natural resource projects. This position will also be responsible for delivering a basic, field-based environmental education curriculum; transporting the crew to and from worksites each day in a 15 passenger van; providing general motivation to crew; ensuring correct and timely completion of projects; and ensuring crew health, safety, and well-being.

The 11-month AmeriCorps Member placement is to begin September 2009. The Coordinator will expand OEC’s presence at community festivals and events by recruiting and coordinating volunteers; assisting staff with outreach activities; and conducting an analysis of outreach programs in Oregon.

Salary / Pay Rate:Member Benefits Include: • A taxable, monthly living allowance (before taxes, approximately $1,036). • Upon successful completion of a term of service, eligible members/leaders receive an education award of $4,725. The education award can be used to repay qualified student loans or for further education in an accredited institution of higher learning, vocational or trade schools. The education award is taxed in the year that it is used. • Loan forbearance (after successful completion of a term of service, AmeriCorps will pay the accrued interest on qualified loans, which is taxable). • Basic medical insurance (covers members only, not dependents; vision and dental not included). • Child care allowance for those who qualify. • Professional development, trainings and networking opportunities.

Rigler School Carnival - Volunteers Needed

Impact Northwest's Rigler SUN Community School is housed in a vibrant and diverse school community. We need volunteers to help with our SCHOOL CARNIVAL on May 29, 2009 from 4-9pm. Volunteers are needed to help with set-up/clean-up, the bouncy house, dunk tank, cake walk, facepainting, carnival games, book sale, ticket sales, auction/raffle, and food booths. This is a great opportunity to help a diverse community.
