Aurora Chorus Presents

Well Behaved Women Rarely Make History

Joan Szymko, artistic director

Signe Lusk, accompanist

With special guests, emma’s revolution

Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Aurora Chorus invites you to the world of courageous, audacious and determined women who made history while breaking though cultural and societal barriers. In song and spoken word, we hear the enduring echo of the voices of women who spoke their truths despite their upbringing and society’s expectations.

Special guest duo, Pat Humphries and Sandy O of emma’s revolution (www.emmasrevolution.com),are award-winning, activist musicians who bring their uprising of truth, hope and a dash of healthy irreverence to our concert. Their song, “Peace, Salaam, Shalom”, written in response to the events of 9/11, has been sung around the world to great acclaim. "The powers that be can control the media but it's hard to stop a good song...Pat's songs will be sung well into the 22nd century."

Included in this celebration of gutsy women will be some of our own local heroes: Gennie Nelson, founder of Sisters of The Road; Rosie Sizer, Portland Police Chief; State Representattive Carolyn Tomei; Lillian Pitt, Native American artist; cultural activist Antoinette Edwards; and others.

This compelling program of music interspersed with provocative poetry and writing is sure to inspire and delight.

AURORA CHORUS–powerful women singing peace

Since its formation in 1992, Aurora Chorus has combined the art of choral singing with the desire to create community in an atmosphere of inclusiveness and respect. Led by director Joan Szymko, Aurora has become a source of strength and inspiration in our community through well-honed, heartfelt performances of music as rich and diverse as the lives of the women who sing. Aurora demonstrates the power of women assembled, and the beauty and power of music to heal, to inspire, and to reflect the universal yearning for peace.

Aurora Chorus has produced two CDs: Full Circle and Solstice, which are available at selected outlets and at www.aurorachorus.org
