Legacy Emanuel Workshop: Coping With Childhood Cancer

Childhood cancer affects the whole community. How can we, as individuals and as a caring community, support them? Gina Volonte, LCSW and Sarah McDonald, LCSW, who are both Pediatric Oncology Social Workers, will discuss the challenges of caring for a child with cancer and its effects on other family members.

This workshop is open to anyone who is affected by childhood cancer, including family members and those in the community who want to support a family experiencing such a diagnosis. Topics will include: helping children understand and cope with illness and treatment, providing effective discipline and tools for supporting the entire family. Time for discussion and Q&A. Free.

Volunteer for Second Saturday at Jason Lee School

Jason Lee K-8 will host a school beautification and development volunteer day, known as Second Saturday, on October 10th, 2009. Volunteers will be welcomed and greatly appreciated for their contribution of time and effort towards improving school grounds. Due to fall weather, projects will be hosted indoors and include tasks such as prep work and painting. Jason Lee is in serious need of reliable and productive volunteers that are motivated to participate in Portland Public School sponsored events.

Homework Club Volunteer Tutor at Jason Lee School

General Position summary:

Jason Lee will offer Homework Club to students in grades 4th through 8th this year. Volunteer tutors will work with students in small groups and one-on-one depending on attendance and teacher expectations. Grades will be divided so that tutors will work with one age group at a time. Students in the club need academic guidance with math concepts and problem solving strategies, reading, writing, and study skills.
