Are All Children the Future? Caring for Oregon’s At-Risk Youth

The needs of teen parents and their infants, young adults in juvenile custody and homeless street youth go too often ignored by the communities they live in. Though Portland is lucky to have one of the strongest social service networks in the country, it still struggles to serve its at-risk youth.

On March 19, Dennis Morrow will discuss the status of homeless youth and other vulnerable young populations in Portland, the challenges of creating effective delivery systems for them and the miracles that a committed and caring community can achieve. He will also address why gangs are sometimes more effective in looking after their members than youth assistance and treatment programs.

Movies and Meaning Group "The Hurt Locker" - March 18

The movies and Meaning Group is held the third Thursday of the month (March 18). Every month I try to find a movie that provides for some good discussion around the values we hold and the philosophical, spiritual or religious roots from which our values emerge. I also try to find venues that are low cost, are near a good restaurant, pub, or wine room, and are relatively easy to get to. It's difficult to get all those pieces to work together every month. This month we did pretty well.
