Invitation to Experience Cohousing - Sept 16, Oct 3 and Oct 21

Daybreak Cohousing Community Offers Social and Tour on September 16, October 3 and October 21 Meet members of Daybreak Cohousing, learn about cohousing and tour the community on site at 2525 N. Killingsworth Street. (#72 Killingsworth bus or Max to the Killingsworth station).

 

Daybreak Cohousing was named one of the nations “top 10 green cohousing developments” by Natural Home Magazine (January 2009). Daybreak members range in age from babies to 70+. Homes have most of the features of conventional homes, and members also enjoy extensive common facilities.

 

Tours/Socials will be held: Thursday, September 16, 6:30-8 p.m. Sunday, October 3, 1:30-3:30 p.m. and Thursday, October 21, 6:30-8 p.m.

Young Audiences' Artist Showcase October 3

The 2nd annual Artist Showcase, presented by Young Audiences Arts for Learning Oregon & SW Washington will take place Sunday October 3 from 1-5pm. Buckman School, Portland Public School’s arts focus elementary school in Southeast Portland, provides a wonderful backdrop for the multi-disciplinary arts festivities.

Janus Youth Programs has the following positions available. Janus is a nonprofit agency providing community-based services, including residential and shelter care, to youth referred by OYA and/or DHS, as well as homeless and street-dependent youth. We operate facilities in Oregon and in SW Washington. Services also include alternative education (Lents Education Center) and an Urban Agricultural program. We are an agency that values diversity and values the contributions made by our staff in helping the youth we serve. All positions involve working together with strong, supportive teams to support and make a difference in a young person's life.

position summary:

Volunteers mentor youth transitioning from the GED program at SE Works into post-secondary education. They offer support, encouragement, and motivation to youth in their first few semesters of college. Mentors can work one-to-one, with groups, or provide specialized support surrounding life skills. We ask that volunteers are available for a period of 9 months to foster a lasting relationship with the youth. Mentoring times vary and depend on volunteer and participant availability. Expect to meet with youth once a week (additional phone or email contact may be needed) and attend occasional group activities.

Interpreters Needed this Sunday 9/12

The Lents International Farmers Market is seeking friendly, outgoing volunteer interpreters to help with a customer survey this Sunday, September 12th from 9am - 2pm. Languages most needed are Spanish, Russian, Hmong and Vietnamese. Volunteer shifts are needed for two shifts - either 9-11:30am or 11:30am-2pm. Are you able and willing to donate your time and skills? Do you like to have fun? Would you be interested in welcoming immigrants into our community? Would you like to learn about a new culture? Learn a new language? Would you like to be a mentor?

 

Come share, build, and practice your skills by volunteering your time with us!

 

We are looking for mentors who are willing to help East African, Burmese, Eastern European and Hispanic youth. Mentors will spend one and a half hours a week helping with homework and English, talking about school, life, and the youth’s future.

Seeking volunteer tutors for Homework Club

ROSE CDC's Homework Club is part of our youth development programs, aim at helping children and youth from low income families succeed in school. The Club runs from 3:30-5:00pm Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students engage in warm up activities before working with their tutor on homework and/or areas where they need help.

 

Tutor responsibilities 1.Help students with homework and/or identified subjects 2.Build positive relationship with students. 4.Must commit to at least one day a week for 3 months

 

Volunteer qualifications: 1.dependable 2.enjoys helping young people 3.willingness to maintain the confidentiality of youth and families served 4.friendly, patient, and optimistic

The NW's largest kids and maternity consignment sale JUST BETWEEN FRIENDS is at the Portland Expo Center Sept 17-19th. All of the unsold clothes and shoes at the end of the sale are donated to the Portland Police Sunshine Division. This is HUGE for us and allows us to keep our free clothing room STOCKED FULL of baby, toddler, kid, and maternity clothes and shoes ALL TIME.

 

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS TO HELP MAKE THE SALE A SUCCESS AND SUPPORT THE SUNSHINE DIVISION

Become an After School Assistant with Buckman's SUN Program!

The Buckman Elementary SUN Community School is looking for volunteers to assist in after school classes as an assistant teacher or tutor. This opportunity offers great classroom management experience working with elementary age children. After school activities include a number of reading and writing opportunities, homework club, science, music, drama, art, and much, much more! Buckman SUN Community School serves over 500 students a year in grades K-5.

Volunteer at Serving Up Style!

Please join Molly’s Fund Fighting Lupus for Serving Up Style, Portland’s premier design event! 10 of Portland’s top designers will create stunning dining rooms and compete for awards, all to raise awareness of lupus, a deadly autoimmune disease. But we need your help to be successful!

 

Serving Up Style volunteers will engage visitors, guiding them through the design showcase and providing information on lupus. Shifts are three hours, and you can take on as many as you like over the four-day event. Volunteers receive free entry to the Fall Home and Garden Show ($10 value), and you are free to enjoy the rest of the show after your shift.

Math and ESL Tutors

Students come to the SUN Room and Sun classes to learn, have fun and grow. Unfortunately, many students struggle with barriers to academic success and need some extra help in their classes. We are especially in need of math tutors.

 

Timeframe: Fall term begins September 20th. The tutoring schedule is mon-thurs 3:15-5pm. Tutors should be able to attend at least one day a week.

 

Tasks: To assist madison students with school work—general concepts, problem solving -skills, and making up missing assignments. Make regular notes about student’s progress in tutoring. Communicate with teacher and Sun Staff about students’ progress.
