Just a reminder that time is closing in on the U.S. premiere of "This is CANCER". Don't miss this event, and tell everyone you know! It's unlikely that Bruce Horak will be coming this way again, so this is a very special chance to see him perform.

 

For those of you who haven't gotten a chance to see it, I'm including a link to his recent interview on CNN. The lines around the block to see his show and the 5-star reviews in every paper caught their attention, and they decided to do a focus piece on him. The piece features an interview with the character Cancer himself as well as the actor Horak:

Master Vegetarian Program to begin Sept 28

The Master Vegetarian Program is an 8-week series that provides information on all aspects of following a healthy, environmentally-sustainable plant-based diet. Talks cover vegetarian nutrition, diet and chronic disease prevention, the environmental impacts of the foods we grow and eat, the life of farm animals, animal rights/welfare philosophies, answering the questions about plant-based diets, and more. Library Friends Book Sale, October 8-11

Oregon's biggest used book sale will be the weekend of Oct. 8-11 at 1205 NE 33rd Ave. at Sandy Boulevard.

 

Held by the nonprofit The Friends of the Multnomah County Library, the 37th annual sale offers an estimated 100,000 items, including good quality books, CDs, DVDs, videos, audio books, sheet music and records.

 

Hours are 6 to 9 pm Friday -- members' night, 9 am to 6 pm Saturday, 11 am to 5 pm Sunday and 9 am to 3 pm Monday -- half price day. Memberships are sold at the door Friday.

 

Most books are priced at $1.50. Children's materials start at 50 cents.

 

Free on-street parking is available nearby, and the No. 12 bus serves the site.

Oregon Teenagers: You Ask the Candidates

We are looking for Oregon teenagers who have questions for Oregon's gubernatorial candidates.

 

All we need is a video of no more than 90 seconds.

 

Between 5 and 7 questions will be selected from all of the submissions. Selected questions will be posted, along with the candidates’ responses, on the candidates’ websites, YouTube, the Oregon Student Mock Election site and the League of Women Voters of Oregon’s Facebook page.

 

Questions and answers will also be made into a short film that will be shown at the Hollywood theater in Portland as part of the YouthFilm annual awards ceremony in May.

Workshop announcement: Beyond Conflict Management

Beyond Conflict Resolution

 

20-hour intensive workshop

 

What do you do when your buttons get pushed and all those wonderful conflict management skills seem to fly out the window? You have to learn how to change the way you think about conflict. Otherwise you will keep getting caught up in old, unproductive patterns.

 

This workshop is the next step in your search for mastery in the art of non-defensive communication.

 

The facilitator is Emily Newberry, and the workshop is jointly sponsored by Wizense, Inc. and Resolutions Northwest.

Volunteering

Help preserve Kenz Wetland on Saturday

Want to improve Oregon’s waterways without driving to the coast? Volunteer with SOLV and the Wetland’s Conservancy on Saturday from 10 to 1 at the Kenz Wetland Enhancement Project. The Kenz Wetland Preserve has a remnant Willamette wet prairie that is threatened by non-native Teasel and non-native Hawthorne shrubs. Volunteer stewards will help TWC's land and remove seed heads from Teasel and cut-back Hawthorne to preserve this unique wetland in the middle of an urban area.

Plant Trees with SOLV in the Tryon Creek Basin on Oct 2

Plant native trees and shrubs with SOLV in the Tryon Creek watershed on Saturday, October 2! We will be working in the Tryon Creek basin at Rizwan Mosque from 9:00am to 12:00pm rain or shine, and all tools, gloves and supplies will be provided. By planting native trees and shrubs, volunteers will be lowering stream temperatures and creating an ecosystem that will filter polluted stormwater runoff, improve water quality, provide better habitat for wildlife, and be more resilient to climate change.

Volunteers for IRCO's Sabin SUN Program Needed

IRCO's Sabin SUN School (Grades PK-7) offers eight-week class terms for students but we need your help! We are looking for volunteers who will assist in the planning and implementation of classes that meets once or twice per week for one-two hours. The volunteers will assist with the distribution of activity supplies and may work one-on-one with students experiencing difficulty completing or participating in the class activities. AKA Science (Volunteer) Teacher

Jason Lee School will host AKA (All Kids Are Scientists) Science class after school this academic year (10/11). The class will be offered once a week, for an eight week term.

 

If you enjoy hands on science projects and working with students in a K-8 public school, please contact Josh Springer at [email protected] for more information about the position. The volunteer position includes free trainings and all science project supplies.

 

Jason Lee is a Title 1 school, educating students from many cultural backgrounds. Our diverse school intends to expand our after school activities schedule, offering more opportunities to students, many of whom are eligible for free and reduced lunch.
