League of Women Voters to Host Presentation on Peak Oil - Public Invited at 7pm on February 10th

John Kaufmann, Senior Policy Analyst with the Oregon Department of Energy’s Conservation Division, will discuss “peak oil” on February 10th at 7pm. The event will be held in the Board Room of the Multnomah County Building, 501 SE Hawthorne Boulevard, Portland. The event is free, and the public is invited to attend.

Private Lives in the Public Eye: A free public panel on politics, ethics, and the media. Thursday, January 29, 2009, 6–7:30 p.m. UO Portland, White Stag Building, 70 NW Couch St., Portland. Free and open to the public.

In response to the controversy surrounding Portland Mayor Sam Adams, the public is invited to attend a free panel on politics, ethics, and the media: “Private Lives in the Public Eye.” The event is sponsored by the Oregon Council for the Humanities, in partnership with the George S. Turnbull Portland Center of the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication and the City Club of Portland’s Agora Committee.

The mission of Chess for Success (CFS) is to help children develop the skills necessary for success in school and life by learning chess. CFS is not a chess program; it is an educational program that uses chess to teach children high-level thinking and social skills. Activities are managed by a paid coach, a teacher at the school, who provides chess instruction after school. We are currently serving 3200 children in 83 schools in 16 school districts in the neediest communities. 70% of students in our schools qualify for Free or Reduced lunch and the average percentage of minority students is 60%. In addition to the after-school program, we run the Chess for Success Regional and State Tournaments. This scholastic chess tournament has a 42 year history.

PEEPs Support Coordinator

Help us build on the success of this unique children's environmental ed program!   PEEPs (Portland Environmental Engagement Program) is a spring, summer, and fall program for middle school boys and girls, focusing on environmental projects, service experiences, and leadership development.  The PEEPs Support Coordinator will help to plan and implement the summer program, develop community partnerships, identify fundraising and outreach opportunities, recruit campers and volunteer staff for the program, and serve as one of the camp counselors when in the field.

  Background in environmental education and experience with the middle school age group is required.  Knowledge of Pacific Northwest ecology and Wilderness First Aid certification are a plus.

This entry-level, non-profit coordinator, AmeriCorps VISTA position will be responsible for building a regional network of youth development workers in a joint project of Oregon Mentors and OregonASK. Forest Grove Farmers Market Poster Contest

The Forest Grove Farmers Market is holding its third annual poster contest. The top three finishers will receive a cash prize ($100, $50, $25) and the winner's design will be used as the official poster for this season's market. Your poster Must Be 11x17" with a 2 inch margin at the bottom that we will use for sponsors' logos and also must include the following information: Forest Grove Farmers Market Wednesdays 4 pm - 8pm May 13th - October 14th Main St. between 21st Ave. and Pacific Ave.

Shamanic Empowerment Weekend, February 21-22

In these times of turmoil and transformation, developing relationships with our personal spirit allies can ground us, giving us the resources to navigate the twists and turns of life with spiritual power and joy!

This weekend intensive provides beginning, in-depth instruction in fundamental shamanic journey skills. Learn how to journey safely to the spirit world and back, develop relationships with your personal spirit allies, learn how to formulate questions to elicit the counsel and personal healing you seek, and work with the information you receive.

Volunteering

Volunteers Needed for Oregon Academic Decathlon

The 2009 Oregon Academic Decathlon state competition will be held at the end of February at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.

Volunteers are needed to serve as judges for the speech or interview events on Friday, February 27th in the university's Education Building. The time commitment is from 3:00 to 6:00 PM.

No prior experience or expertise is required as training (and snacks!) will be provided.

This is a great opportunity to help Oregon's high school students participate in a prestigious, nationwide academic program. The winner of the competition will represent Oregon at the USAD National Finals in Memphis, TN in April.

Please come help students realize their potentials and make Oregon proud.

Are you able and willing to donate your time and skills?  Do you like to have fun?  Would you be interested in welcoming refugees and immigrants into our community?  Would you like to learn about a new culture?  Learn a new language?  Would you like to be a mentor?

Come share, build, and practice your skills by volunteering your time with us!

We are looking for mentors who are willing to help Eastern European Youth.  Mentors will spend one and a half hours a week helping with homework and English, talking about school, life, and the youth's future.
