Movies and Meaning Group "Capitalism: A Love Story"

Please join us this Thursday, October 22, for the viewing of Michael Moore's latest documentary, "Capitalism: A Love Story." We will join for a late afternoon movie on the East Side and then walk 2-3 blocks to a Chinese restaurant for appetizers and drinks while we discuss the movie. Come with your own thoughts and questions about what your values, faith, or spirituality have to say about the economic structures we establish in our lives and in our communities. As always, Michael Moore will give us plenty about which to debate. We will debate with openness, passion, and respect for each other!

Celebrate 85 years of Toastmasters with the Humorous Speech Contest

85 years ago, Ralph Smedley, a youth leader, held a meeting in the basement of the YMCA to impart the tenets of public speaking.  That initial meeting has grown into the worldwide leader of communication and leadership skills known as Toastmasters International, a non-profit organization with more than a quarter of a million members and over 10,000 clubs in 62 countries.

What better way to celebrate 85 years of proven success than to enjoy an evening of merriment as Area contest winners vie for the Division championship with their humorous speeches!  The Downtown Division consists of twenty-eight Toastmasters clubs in Downtown Portland, Old Town/Chinatown, University District, and the Pearl District.

History Pub “Sisters of the Holy Names: Serving Oregon for 150 Years”

History Pub “Sisters of the Holy Names: Serving Oregon for 150 Years” October 26

In 1859, twelve intrepid Catholic nuns arrived in Portland after a five-week journey from Quebec, Canada. Two weeks after their arrival, the Sisters of the Holy Names opened St. Mary’s Academy. They quickly built additional schools throughout the Pacific Northwest and eventually established a number of universities, including Marylhurst College. The Sisters assumed responsibility for large numbers of orphan and destitute children.  In the early 20th century, Holy Names Sisters opposed the activities of the Ku Klux Klan and helped establish fair wages for working women.
