Parenting Classes at the Julia West House

Make parenting a pleasure with free parenting classes at the Julia West House. These classes are designed for everyone, but special consideration is given to those parents who do not currently have custody.

The course is six weeks, and meets each Monday, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. from January 4 to February 8.

Taught by certified parent educator Laura Knechtges from Metropolitan Family Services, this class meets court and DHS mandated requirements. There is no charge for classes.

Find Your Community in 2010 – Tour Daybreak Cohousing on January 3

Is one of your new year’s resolutions to find a sense of community and a more sustainable lifestyle? Are you seeking a family-friendly, transit and bike-oriented community? Then you may be interested in Daybreak Cohousing.

Meet members of Daybreak, learn about cohousing and tour the community on Sunday, January 3 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on site at 2525 N. Killingsworth Street. (#72 Killingsworth bus or Max to the Killingsworth station). Members have been moving into Daybreak and new homes are for sale including 1, 2 and 3 bedroom units.

Environmental work with kids

The SUN after-school program at Hall Elementary School in Gresham is in need of an "environmental club" teacher. Must be willing/able to commit to teach for at least 1 hour once/week for at least 1 term (8 weeks). Winter term begins January 19. Classes are from 3:10-4:10pm or 4:10-5:10pm. Content for the class is flexible, but should focus on environmental/sustainability issues at school and beyond. There is also a possibility of working with the school garden.

$13-$15/hr. plus prep time.

Web Design SUN Instructor, Ron Russell Middle School

Ron Russell Community SUN School is looking for a web design instructor who would be interested in teaching a class once a week to middle school students. The class will focus on learning basic html. Students would contribute to their own pages, creating a class website as a final project.

The class would run from 4:00pm-5:15pm and would begin in mid January and end mid March. The instructor would be paid 15 dollars an hour. Please contact Julieanna Elegant if you are interested at [email protected] or (503) 256-6500 ext 5624.

Northwest Housing Alternatives seeks volunteers to serve on our Board of Directors

Northwest Housing Alternatives (NHA), a stable nonprofit organization, seeks volunteers to serve two-year terms on our Board of Directors. NHA provides homes to 2,328 people across the state of Oregon. Our affordable rental units serve people with low incomes including families, seniors and people with special needs. NHA also provides emergency shelter, transitional housing and services to help residents remain stable and access new opportunities for success. The organization is a leader in the local affordable housing industry, and service on our board may provide experience and entrée to someone hoping to get into housing, social services or other nonprofit work.

Support local classrooms by volunteering at the front desk of the Free Store for Teachers!

As a Front Desk Volunteer you will greet and check in teachers as they arrive, explain shopping procedures, answer questions, and help with checkout. Front Desk Volunteers are a vital part of the Free Store for Teachers, connecting Portland Public School teachers with the supplies needed to create an excellent learning environment for all students!
