Small City, Big Scene: Independent Music in Portland, a Discussion

On July 9, Metro Council President and music aficionado David Bragdon a moderates discussion with four independent Portland musicians: Dave Allen, Rachel Blumberg, Jared Mees and Laura Veirs. These musicians will discuss factors that contribute to the success of Portland’s independent music scene, the ever-changing landscape of the music industry and music distribution, and why we should care about sustaining independent music in Portland.

ROSE Community Development is holding a Garage Sale on July 23-24th to raise fund for our summer and after-school programs. We need your help! Please donate items we can sell! We accept any items in good condition.

Get the Facts & Mortgage Default Orientations

The Community Housing Resource Center will be holding a free homebuyer workshop, Get the Facts, on Wednesday, July 7th, from 6-7:30PM at the Center. This orientation outlines the steps to homeownership and the services provided by the Center. No reservations are required.

 

The Center will also be holding a free Mortgage Default Intake Orientation on Thursday, July 8th, from 5-6PM at the Center. This workshop is the required first step in learning how to work with your lender and how the Center can assist you in resolving your mortgage issue. You do not need to be in default to get help. No reservations are required.

Enjoy a beautiful summer evening on Sauvie Island, learning about the Sauvie Island Center, touring the Sauvie Island Organics farm, and listening to music while enjoying a picnic on the grass. We are gathering our friends and supporters to introduce them to the work we do educating youth about food, farming and the land. See the farm, experience our educational programs, and enjoy live music on the grass and dancing in the barn.

Essential Responsibilities (to include, but not limited to): • Working with PUR staff and our community partners to develop hands-on educational programs and tools for youth and volunteers. • Leading student work crews in restoration projects. • Organizing and assisting youth and volunteer participation in on-the-ground watershed restoration projects.

Salary / Pay Rate: A taxable, monthly living allowance (before taxes, approximately $1072). Upon successful completion of a term of service, eligible members/leaders receive an education award of $5,350. The education award can be used to repay qualified student loans or for further education in an accredited institution of higher learning, vocational or trade schools. The education award is taxed in the year that it is used. Loan forbearance (after successful completion of a term of service, AmeriCorps will pay the accrued interest on qualified loans, which is taxable). Basic medical insurance (covers members only, not dependents; vision and dental not included). Child care allowance for those who qualify. Found Object Printmaking Workshop at The ReBuilding Center

We are offering a one day printmaking workshop at The ReBuilding Center. Learn to make prints out of a variety of salvaged building materials!

 

Found Object Printmaking

 

Exploration of fundamental, non-traditional and invented printmaking techniques to create prints from found materials. Print from the inventory of found objects available at The ReBuilding Center. Existing patterns, fabricated textures, interesting shapes or materials can be molded or modified to pull a print from by hand. Learn how to print without a press! For all skill levels.

 

Sat July 24, 9am-3:30pm

 

Tuition: $50

Carpentry for Women Level 2

The ReBuilding Center hosts a carpentry workshop for women who want to expand upon their tool skills:

 

Carpentry for Women II

 

This workshop will build on skills learned in the Introduction to Carpentry for Women class, and review use of the circular saw, drill and chopsaw. We will introduce the table saw, router, and sawzall, as well as new carpentry concepts, helpful tips and common hand tools. All students will build a step stool from recycled wood to bring home. Open to students who have taken Introduction to Carpentry for Women or equivalent experience.

Volunteer at the 2010 PDX Pop Now! Festival

The PDX Pop Now! music festival is just around the corner... well July 30, 31, and Aug. 1 at Rotture!

 

Volunteers are essential to PDX Pop Now! and they are a huge part of how the festival is free every year! We're meeting at Colonel Summers Park (20th and SE Belmont) on July 10th at noon for festival prepping. Come out and meet board members, ask questions, and see what it's all about!

Food & Water Watch Acitvist/Volunteer meeting

Another Activist Meeting! Wednesday July 14th at 6pm at the Food & Water Watch Office (917 SW Oak St, Suite 404)

 

This meeting will hopefully be quick and a little different from what they have been. We are anticipating the publication of the OWRD application for water exchange on the 13th, kicking off the 30 day public comment period so brace yourselves. Once we are done with business matters we will plan to head over to “Pint's Against Plastic” at Keen Headquarters to support the local Surfrider Foundation chapter's efforts to get one-use plastic bags banned in Portland!
