Family Gardening Workshop: Bugs and Insects on 8/5

Join Growing Gardens for a Parent-Child Workshop on Wednesday August 5th from 5:30pm-7:00pm in SE Portland!

"Bugs and Insects" is a family gardening workshop geared towards children 6-12 yrs old. Go on a romp through an established school garden searching for bugs and insects. Learn about what makes a bug a bug and why insects are important to our gardens through song, art and games!

TRAGIC MAGIC at Milagro Theatre Friday Aug 7

On Friday, Aug. 7, Miracle Theatre Group is pleased to host “Tragic Magic”, an evening with three different solo performance artists from New York City — Heather Ács, Glenn Marla and Silas Howard — sharing three separate, but complementary excerpts of new works. The performance begins at 8 p.m. at the Milagro Theatre (525 SE Stark St., Portland). Come Paint the Hawthorne Hostel Community Mural This Week!

The Hawthorne Hostel is hosting an Open House-style mural painting project.

We welcome the community to join us to create a mural on the back of one of our rainwater cisterns during this week's painting events!

Painting days are 8/4 and 8/5 from 5:30-8:30 PM, and on 8/8 from 11:00 AM- 3:00 PM at the Hostel, located at 3031 SE Hawthorne Blvd. Pre-registration is recommended, though not required. If you would like to sign up in advance or if you have any questions, please contact Emily Hill at 503-823-5794 or at [email protected].

Hawthorne Hostel belongs to Hostelling International USA, a nonprofit organization committed to promoting international understanding of the world and its people through hostelling.

NWSA's Professional Placement (P2) program seeks an Environmental Contaminants Associate, to be placed with US Fish & Wildlife in Portland.   Position Summary: The Environmental Contaminants Associate will assist in performing technical analysis of various chemical contaminant issues facing Oregon’s threatened and endangered species. Many risk assessment tools and models will be used in this position. Here is a rewarding opportunity to assist in conserving Oregon’s amazing fish and wildlife while gaining valuable experience. The position exists within the Environmental Contaminants Division of the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Office, which is an Ecological Services field office of the Fish and Wildlife Service.

Prevent Lead Poisoning - Free Workshop

Do you live in an older home? Do you have double-hung windows, painted stairs, and/or painted doors? If you live in a home older than 1978, you may have concerns about being exposed to lead. Community Energy Project provides free workshops to the community on how to protect you and your family from the dangers of lead poisoning. The class includes how lead affects the body, common exposure points in the home, diet, and lead-safe cleaning techniques. Qualified participants receive a free kit of materials include lead-safe cleaning and testing supplies as well as information on other lead resources in the community.

Our next workshop is August 11th from 6:00-7:30pm at Community Energy Project (422 NE Alberta Street)

Workshop is child friendly.

This workshop will cover the basics of designing, planting, and maintaining a many-layered woodland garden of fruit and nut trees, perennial and annual vegetables, and flowers.

Kid's Ceramics Class

Last chance to sign up, just a few spots left! Tuesdays in August (Aug. 4th-25th) 2-3:30pm! This class explores a wide range of basic pottery techniques including: wheel throwing, pinch pots, sculptural forms and masks, as well as firing and glazing. Children ages 4-10 will make a variety of pottery items to bring home. $80 per child or $75 each if you sign up with a friend includes all materials and firing. Scholarships may be available.
