Ballot Measures 66 and 67 Debate

In 2009 the Oregon Legislature passed two bills as part of an effort to address the state's fiscal crisis: one raising taxes on high income earners; the other increasing the state's corporate minimum tax and levying new taxes on corporate revenue. In response, critics of the legislation gathered a sufficient number of petitions to qualify two referenda - Measures 66 and 67 - for a January 26, 2010 special election allowing the electorate to decide the fate of these tax increases.

Cognitive Therapy for Psychosis and Associated Trauma with Ron Unger, MSW Fri and Sat January 8 and 9, 8:30 am-4 pm This two-part series focuses on cognitive therapy for psychosis and associated trauma as an evidence-based approach that can help people reduce problems associated with experiences such as delusions, voices, and paranoia. Learn how to work collaboratively with clients with psychosis, "explore the evidence," rather than impose beliefs, and use strategies that are often surprisingly similar to cognitive methods for reducing depression and anxiety. Develop options for clients so they are no longer forced to rely entirely on the often limited effectiveness of medications for symptom reduction.  Register for one or both days.

Backpacks and spiral notebooks needed for new refugee students

Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Program will be welcoming several new refugee families this month, and more in the coming months, from Bhutan, Burma, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. We are in need of new, or slightly used, backpacks and spiral notebooks (college ruled, if possible) for ages 5 on up to 18 as they begin their education in the United States. Just a note: The schools prefer regular sized backpacks for the young ones (K - 3rd grade) so the small backpacks aren't necessary.
