OMEN Releases RFP for 2010-2011 VISTA Program

OMEN is seeking applications to become a VISTA host site from organizations that are working with microenterprise development, financial literacy and asset building.  Approved sites will recruit a full-time VISTA volunteer who will serve at their site from August 20th, 2010 to August 19th, 2011.  Applications must be received at the OMEN office by 5:00 PM on Friday, February 19th, 2010.  Sites will be notified of their acceptance by March 12th, 2010.  To apply, please visit OMEN’s website to download the application and instructions:  http://www.oregon-microbiz.org/assetbuildingcorps.cfm.

Free Beginning Computer Class at Julia West House

Join us at the Julia West House for a BEGINNING computer skills class every Wednesday from 1:15pm - 2:30pm. This class is a chance for computer beginners to practice basic typing skills, online searches, and e-mail.

To join the class, please call Patty Warman at 503-222-6564. The free class is open to all adults, ages 21 and over. Julia West House is located at 522 SW 13th St. Portland, Oregon. The Mission of Julia West House is to provide education and support that will empower low-income and homeless residents of Downtown Portland to alter their lives through positive action.

Western States Center is seeking an intern to conduct research and interviews to compile a historical timeline of organizing in the region and the work of Western States Center for the 20th anniversary of the Community Strategic Training Initiative (CSTI), the Center's highly regarded annual activist and organizer training event. The internship consists of two phases, described below. This is a 3 to 6 month position at 12hrs/week depending on the ability to complete one of the phases or both phases by the intern.

Animal Aid, Inc. a non-profit, pet rescue organization and shelter located in SW Portland has one full time position open for a coordinator to manage our no-interest emergency veterinary service financial aid and our spay/neuter program. This position involves responding quickly and efficiently by phone to client inquiries for emergency and spay/neuter services for their pets. It requires accurate documentation of the results of each conversation into our call center system. Basic Financial Tools for Small Business Owners

Some of you have said weekday evening seminars are difficult for you, so we're trying out our first Saturday seminar. Suzanne Feucht, an accounting coach and trainer at SF Business Services, will be doing a roundtable discussion of eight of the most relevant financial topics for micro-entrepreneurs, including:

- bookkeeping challenges for different entities

- which software to choose for recordkeeping

- inventory challenges

$5 for MCNW clients and $10 for community members. At the Mercy Corps NW office at 43 SW Naito Pkwy downtown by the Burnside Bridge.
