Migrant Health Day and Health and Resource Fair!

Please join Virginia Garcia Memorial Foundation and Health Center for: Planting the Seeds for a Healthy Future, National Health Center Week and Migrant Farmworker Health Day 2009.

This year National Health Center Week is August 9 through the 15. The Virginia Garcia Memorial Foundation and Health Center will partner with local organizations, government officials, media, and community members for two inspiring events during this week.

Four Prominent Legislators Assess the Session: 2009 Legislative Wrap-Up Part One

Oregon’s 75th legislative session, held amid the worst economic recession in decades, recently came to a close. On July 31, City Club of Portland welcomes Speaker of the House Dave Hunt, Senator Margaret Carter, Co-Chair of the Joint Legislative Committee on Ways & Means, Senate Republican Leader Ted Ferrioli and Senate President Peter Courtney who will discuss both the accomplishments and failures of the session.

Parent and Child workshop: Bugs and Insects 8/5

Join Growing Gardens for Parent-Child Workshop on Wednesday August 5th from 5:30pm-7:00pm in SE Portland!

"Bugs and Insects" is a family gardening workshop geared towards children 6-12 yrs old. Go on a romp through an established school garden searching for bugs and insects. Learn about what makes a bug a bug and why insects are important to our gardens through song, art and games!

Next Meeting Announcement - Committee for a Museum of the Peace Corps Experience

The Committee for a Museum of the Peace Corps Experience (CMPCE), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) in Portland, will be having its next meeting on Saturday, 31 July  from 3:00 to 5:00 P. M.  The meeting will be in the meeting room of the Hollywood Branch Library located at: 4040 N.E. Tillamook Street, Portland, OR 97212, 503-988-5391. The Committee invites anyone with an interest in the planning of the museum or in the 50th Anniversary Peace Corps exhibit collaboration with the Oregon Historical Society.  Former Peace Corps volunteers are especially invited.  We look forward to seeing you on Saturday afternoon.

Homework Club Coordinator Needed

Volunteer Opportunity with Northwest Housing Alternatives

We are seeking a part-time volunteer to run a homework club for Springwater Commons, an affordable housing complex in SE Portland. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience organizing and implementing an after-school program, and would be great experience for anyone interested in youth development or education.

Homework club takes place Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3 pm-6 pm, and we ask that the volunteer can commit to running the program for at least a semester. Volunteers must be able to pass a criminal background and fingerprint check, and have transportation to and from the site.

Volunteers Wanted for a Green Playground Build

Volunteers Needed for a Green Playground Build

No construction experience needed.

Human Solutions needs 35 volunteers for the BIG BUILD DAY on August 13th to build, assemble and install the playground equipment at an affordable housing complex located at 2609 SE 145th Ave. in Portland. Build Captains will lead groups in putting the equipment together and completing the side projects, which include constructing some raised beds for a community garden. The day will run from 8:30 am to around 3:00 pm, and breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided.
