Come celebrate summer's bounty at the Forum, where in August we'll address "extended harvests." We will be exploring techniques, spaces and technologies that extend growing seasons, increase yield, increase opportunities for local food production and bring the harvest to new places and spaces. Learn to make a terrarium!

Summer days driving you indoors to stay cool? Still want to garden? What better way to combine the two than to create a terrarium! Long time gardener Wally Wagner will presenting a class at Leach Botanical Garden this Saturday, August 1st, from 12-1 pm on "Creating and Maintaining a Terrarium." Wally will demonstrate how to make a terrarium, which will be raffled off at the end of the class. Class participants will receive a booklet with information on making a terrarium, including a list of plant species well-suited to terrariums.

Cost for the class is $10 or $15 for two if you sign up with a friend!

This Sunday check out Tryon Life Community Farm, Portland's most dynamic sustainability education center and learn how to design a Permaculture Food Forest with Toby Hemenway!  Food forests are life-filled places that not only provide food for people, but habitat for wildlife, carbon sequestering, biodiversity, natural soil building, beauty and tranquility, and a host of other benefits. This workshop will cover the basics of designing, planting, and maintaining a many-layered woodland garden of fruit and nut trees, perennial and annual vegetables, and flowers. Major Responsibilities

Office Manager (1/2 time): • Manage the day-to-day operations of a well-organized office which includes supplies, computers, server, copier, phones, all office equipment and office maintenance. ● Assist the Executive Director with office management functions as assigned. ● Work with Executive Director and Bookkeeper to process agency bills, weekly deposits and monthly financial reports. Utilize accounting software to track expenses and revenue and produce reports as needed.

Salary / Pay Rate:Compensation based on experience.

The items include: 6 Hi-back Black Board Chairs with arms (overall width is 26”); 10 Blue Conference Chairs with arms; 3 Black task chairs; 1 small wood square coffee/side table; 2 Purple overstuffed arm chairs; 4 Metal Cabinets, with sliding doors, putty colored; Various other office supplies; Tons of ½ inch, 3 ring, 8 ½ x 9, black view binders never been used. Conversation Project Programs Available to Oregon Nonprofits

Organizations around the state may apply for the 2009–10 season beginning August 1, 2009.

The catalog for the inaugural 2009–10 season of the Conversation Project: A New Chautauqua is now available online, and Oregon nonprofits may sign up for programs starting August 1, 2009, for programs beginning November 1, 2009. The Conversation Project, which connects Oregonians with public scholars and provocative ideas through idea-driven dialogue, is a program of the Oregon Council for the Humanities.

The catalog, instructions for host organizations, and downloadable application form are available at www.oregonhum.org.

Deadline Extended: Free College Course for Low-Income, Portland-Area Adults

Humanity in Perspective (HIP), a free, two-semester, college-level course in the humanities for low-income adults in Portland offered by the Oregon Council for the Humanities (OCH) and Reed College, is accepting applications for the 2009–10 year until Friday, August 7, 2009.

Applications are available for download on the OCH website (www.oregonhum.org) or by request from Sarah Van Winkle, OCH Program Coordinator, at (503) 241-0543, ext. 112. Applicants can apply directly and are also referred by agencies serving low-income adults and families.

World's First Living Building needs Graphic Designer

The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, a group of predominantly African American women, is renovating a former brownfield in North Portland into the city’s first Living Building non-profit community center. This important community demonstration project will illustrate how a small nonprofit can create a “living building”, composed of cargo containers, salvage glass and recycled construction materials and using 50-70% recycled technology.
