  • Where: First Unitarian Portland - 1011 SW 13th
  • Web: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/131280

A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities That Arise in Disaster, will speak in Portland Thursday, October 28.  Tickets are $10 through BrownPaperTickets.com and at the door, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

A Paradise Built in Hell, recently studied by a Transition PDX book circle, was named “The Most Valuable Non-Fiction Book of 2009” by The Nation.  John Nichols of The Nation writes:

What makes A Paradise Built in Hell so radical is Solnit’s refusal to accept the official narrative about Hurricane Katrina and disasters going back to the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. . . . [She] argues not just convincingly but movingly that “when the superstructure of society crumbles” human beings are “freed to act on, most often, not the worst but the best ithin.”
