Join the Global Day of Climate Action on October 24th in Portland as part of 350.org. In Portland, the list of "350" events is growing daily. Already scheduled for our October 24th DAY OF CLIMATE ACTION is a kayak and canoe formation of the number "350" on the Willamette. PSU students, bicyclists, walkers supporting the 350-mile coastal trek, families, and concerned individuals will convene in Pioneer Square.

TreeTalk Workshop: Proper Pruning & Tree Care

Our popular TreeTalk workshop series continues throughout the fall.  You are invited to take part in a series of free, all-about-trees, educational workshops presented by Vancouver Urban Forestry, a division of the Department of Public Works.

Proper Pruning & Tree Care Join this workshop and walking tour with an industry professional to see examples of good and bad pruning practices on street trees and the long term impacts on tree health and structure.  Learn techniques and strategies for proper pruning and get involved in the Tree Awareness Campaign. There will be ample time for questions as well as a hands-on demonstration.

Join us for a Community Potluck & Harvest Fest and help support Living Earth's Hats & Scarves Winter Warming Project. We'll have homegrown live music and a great batch of very inexpensive, good-quality used books on subjects that mirror Living Earth's values—great reads for cold autumn afternoons and winter evenings, or for holiday gifts. Bring a veg/vegan dish to share and connect with old and new friends. We'll also have a few special items for a silent auction, so join us! Cans for the Oregon Food Bank are welcome, too.

Do you need books for your holiday gift program?

Books for Kids is a local nonprofit that supplies new and gently used books to kids in need. We work with more than 80 social service organizations in Oregon and are planning ahead for the holiday gift-giving season.

If you are a nonprofit that needs new books to give to children as holiday gifts, we'd like to know. Also, because we supply books year-round, we'd like to hear from you if you need books for upcoming fall or winter programs.

PSU Human Services Training Fri Oct 30: Adult ADD/ADHD: Transforming Disorganization into Hope

with Gregory Crosby, MA Explore how to assess and treat ADD/ADHD within a biological/psychological and social framework and how to identify other co-occurring disorders. Evidence-based practices for ADD/ADHD will be explored and examined. Treatment outcomes will be enhanced by understanding, identifying and matching a client’s learning style to treatment methods. Emphasis will be on helping clients experience completion through simple, realistic and achievable goals. Are you able and willing to donate your time and skills?  Do you like to have fun?  Would you be interested in welcoming immigrants into our community?  Would you like to learn about a new culture?  Learn a new language?  Would you like to be a mentor?

Come share, build, and practice your skills by volunteering your time with us!

We are looking for mentors who are willing to help East African, Burmese, Eastern European and Hispanic youth.  Mentors will spend one and a half hours a week helping with homework and English, talking about school, life, and the youth’s future.

Brand New Peninsula SUN School Needs Volunteers!

Neighborhood House provides children in SW and North Portland, ages 0-18, the tools they need to thrive and be healthy. We do this in our Head Start classrooms, our SUN school locations at 7 Portland public schools, in our Mentoring Program, and in our Parenting Program.

Currently we need volunteers at our brand new SUN School at Peninsula K-8 in North Portland. The SUN Programs at Neighborhood House use volunteer instructors and tutors. Are you a retired science teacher? Do you have a special skill you would like to teach to children? Or would you simply enjoy helping a child understand their homework?
