Brother, Can You Spare a Dime? Oregon’s Persistent Unemployment Problem

With joblessness over eleven percent, Oregon's unemployment rate is among the highest in the nation. But even in years of rapid job growth, unemployment in Oregon often remains above the national average. On December 4, City Club welcomes Oregon State Labor Economist Art Ayre, who will elaborate upon the numerous reasons why Oregon faces such consistent employment challenges.

Ayre will discuss likely causes, which include: declines in the wood products sector; seasonal employment - and unemployment - in agriculture and manufacturing; an attractive urban culture and recreational opportunities that draw people to Portland despite limited jobs; and the comparatively small size of the labor market which leads to more restrictive job selection.

Donate Art, Support The Community Alliance of Tenants!

The Community Alliance of Tenants is hosting a fundraising Art Party and we need art donations!

The Community Alliance of Tenants or CAT is Oregon's only tenant controlled, renter's rights organization. We run a renter's rights hotline, organize large apartment complexes in the Portland area that have widespread repair issues, many of them occupied by low income tenants and work to change state and local tenant/landlord policy. We strive to create a healthy living environment by educating tenants and empowering them speak out about issues affecting their daily lives.

Portland Area's First Food Pantry Program for Seniors Launched at Neighborhood House

Neighborhood House has opened the area’s first food pantry program targeting the needs of seniors. In these perilous economic times, the organization is seeing more seniors becoming food insecure, often eating only one meal a day, or going without protein or dairy. The program, developed by seniors and staff at the Neighborhood House Senior Center, will work to fill nutritional gaps not addressed by existing food assistance programs.
