Illahee: The Power of Nature: Mount St. Helens 1980 - 2010 Gary Snyder, Ursula K. Le Guin and Jerry Franklin

On 18 May 2010, thirty years to the day after the 1980 eruption, poet-naturalist Gary Snyder, writer Ursula K. Le Guin  and forest ecologist Jerry Franklin will share experiences and writings from Mount St. Helens, where all have deep personal histories, reflecting on themes of destruction and renewal, lessons from cataclysms, and the long term history and future of an iconic Northwest terrain. 

What do science and the humanities each contribute to understanding such places?  And how does Mount Saint Helens inform its two million human neighbors' understanding of their place in nature?

Heart Health

According to the World Health Organization, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the world, even though it is often preventable with healthy lifestyle choices such as exercising and maintaining an appropriate weight. For those with heart disease, new surgical options have revolutionized care, allowing people with the condition to live long, high-quality lives.

On May 21, City Club welcomes heart health specialists Dr. Sanjiv Kaul and Dr. Albert Starr. These two physician-scientists will explain why the occurrence of heart disease in Oregon is among the worst in the nation and will share how they propose to reverse that trend. They will address new findings in heart health and discuss the most current treatment and prevention options that are available in Oregon.

“Innovations in Public Leadership for the Common Good” The First Annual Hatfield School of Government Summer Institute beginning in June of 2010  produced by the Mark O. Hatfield School of Government’s Center for Public Service & Portland State University’s Summer Session   When: The kick-off symposium on June 18 (8:30AM to 5PM) includes a keynote speaker, panel discussions of Senator Hatfield’s leadership legacy, and discussions of core values needed for successful public service. Five courses organized around the symposium explore in greater detail successful leadership innovations that are a hallmark of Senator Mark Hatfield’s courageous 46 year career in public service.

Volunteering

Be a tree advocate with Friends of Trees!

Advocate for a healthier, more livable community by becoming a summer festival volunteer!

The summer is Friends of Trees' outreach season when we are present at street fairs, farmers markets, festivals, Sunday Parkways, etc. to raise awareness of what we do, gather support from the community in terms of joining us for a tree planting as a volunteer or buying a street or yard tree from their home. It's a fun way to be outside and enjoy these various events through a different lens, as well as to meet and talk with a range of interesting people.

In need of a Landscape Architect to help with day care playground

Pathfinder Academy is looking for a donation of time and skills from a Landscape Architect. We are a 501c3 nonprofit alternative high school and contract with Portland Public Schools to serve pregnant and parenting youth. We have recently moved into a facility that will allow on-site child care. This will require a playground/out door space for the children to play and run around in. This project will is an unique opportunity in that we have a defined space that needs to have multiple sensory opportunities, child safe plants, and a playground that is age appropriate for children 0-3 years old.

This Friday at Whitaker Ponds!

The Columbia Slough Watershed Council is hosting an all-afternoon work party this Friday at Whitaker Ponds Nature Park. We still have several large piles of mulch sitting uselessly around the ponds that need to be spread around our trails and this past season’s native plantings. CSWC will provide tools, gloves and refreshments to whomever can come along and help out. The merriment will begin at 1pm and last until 5pm. Please forward this along to any other students or volunteers who might be interested in helping out. Please RSVP to [email protected]
