ROSE Community Development is a nonprofit organization serving outer southeast Portland neighborhoods. ROSE’s mission is to build community and strengthen neighborhood economies that Revitalize Outer South East. ROSE programs include affordable housing development, community economic development and building social capital. We provide youth programs such as Summer Arts Academy and after-school tutoring, and a lot more.

Six fabulous homes on this new tour cover a century of residential construction in Portland and represent a variety of styles and notable architects. The tour will be on Saturday, July 31, 2010 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Proceeds will benefit the Bosco-Milligan Foundation and its education programs, advocacy efforts, and collection stewardship.

Trainings

Suicide Intervention Training (ASIST) Aug 5-6, Portland

There is still space available for the two-day ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) on August 5 and 6, 2010. It will be held at Portland State University, Graduate School of Social Work, in Portland, Oregon.

 

This two day training (14 hours) provides practical suicide first-aid training for all types of caregivers. Learn how to recognize opportunities to help, assess risk of suicide, apply a suicide intervention model, and practice skills. Youth workers, law enforcement, mental health practitioners, foster parents, health workers, faith community leaders and any other potential caregivers are invited to attend!

Tree Care for Gardeners workshop

Tree Care for Gardeners

 

Tuesday, July 27 - 6-8pm

 

Learn tips and techniques for tree care in and around your garden, including how to incorporate shade-lovers and early bloomers around existing trees, maximizing your fruit output. Also learn how to plant, tend, prune and care for the tallest members of your garden. This workshop is in partnership between Growing Gardens and Friends of Trees.

 

This workshop is a $5-20 sliding scale donation. All proceeds benefit Growing Gardens' programs.

Stewardship Saturdays at Tryon Creek

Stewardship Saturdays

 

2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month

 

July 24th Ivy Pull

 

9am to noon

 

2nd Saturdays are always ivy pulls and 4th Saturdays may be trail maintenance in the winter

 

Pull together to remove invasive English ivy and to protect our forest. Ivy out competes our native plants, takes over the forest floor and ruins precious habitat.

 

* Registration is not required but please call ahead with groups of 5 or more

 

* All minors must be checked in at the Nature Center and anyone under 16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian

 

* Gloves and a light snack provided

 

* Please bring your own water bottle

Volunteers needed for a Growing Gardens Tool Drive

Saturday, July 31

 

Whole Foods is generously hosting a tool drive to support Growing Gardens. People bring in new or used working garden tools (pruners, weeders, garden shovels, garden hoes, rakes, spades, brooms, clippers and cultivators) and receive 10% off their groceries.

 

Participating Whole Foods Market stores include:

 

* Laurelhurst (NE 28th & E Burnside) * Hollywood (NE 43rd & Sandy) * Fremont (NE 15th & Fremont) * Pearl District (NW 12th & Couch)

 

We need several volunteers to staff the tool drive at each location for the following shifts:

 

* 1-3:30pm * 3:30-6pm

OMSI Science Days Event Volunteer

OMSI Needs your help August 12-15th (Thursday- Sunday)!

 

Join the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) as a volunteer this summer!

 

August 12-15, OMSI will need lots of additional help from you to host OMSI Science Days. During these days the museum will be open 9:00am-9:00pm and visitors will enjoy a variety of offerings around the museum.

 

This is a major special event that is expected to draw thousands of visitors each day so having additional help will be wonderful! Volunteers at this event will earn a pass for free admission to the museum on a day of their choice.

 

Each day (Aug 12-15) three shifts are available:
