The Journey Out Of Poverty

Poverty due to illness, job loss or other changing circumstances is often temporary. Generational poverty - two or more generations living in poverty - is by definition long term and encompasses a wide set of all-too-often ignored or discounted issues. People born to poverty face physical, emotional and sociological challenges to literacy, education and employment. In addition, childhood life-lessons differ greatly from those of the prevailing middle-class and often lead to misunderstandings and missed opportunities in professional relationships later in life. On June 12, City Club welcomes Donna Beegle who will discuss what it means to grow up poor, the challenges to joining America's middle class, and how to help move people out of poverty.

Free Water to the Weather Workshops

Spring means gardening! Whether you’re planting flowers or vegetables, it’s likely you want a healthy-looking lawn or garden. As we come into summer, you may be trying to balance your concern about water use with your desire for a healthy landscape. Reduce non-point source pollution, unnecessary water use, and wasted fertilizer.

Community Energy Project is offering two free workshops on how to be “water wise” this spring and summer in regards to outdoor watering. Learn how much water REALLY needs to go on your plants, and how to adjust your watering needs based on changes in the weather. Qualified participants receive a kit of free materials – including rain gauges, a soil probe, bucket, and more.

Volunteering

Help a new mom in need!

Being a new mom can be very challenging without a community of support. It is especially challenging for a single mom who is already juggling the demands of a toddler while trying to care for a growing newborn. Impact NW is looking for a few volunteers to make meals for one of our Healthy Start clients for the first week she returns from the hospital with her new baby. She is a single mom with one 13-month old and is scheduled to deliver her second child the last week of August. We would like to find help for her during the first week of September by having a few volunteers pre-cook meals and deliver them to this growing family so mom can spend time caring for her newborn.

Volunteer Teacher for Computer Classes!!

Do you know how to use a computer? Do you speak English and some Spanish? Are you interested in teaching to fight for social justice and workers rights?

Then come volunteer as a teacher for VOZ Workers' Rights Education Project's Computer Classes. In line with our mission, the Computer Classes empower immigrants and day laborers to gain control over their working conditions by providing classes on basic computer skills, using the internet to search for jobs, setting up email accounts, and writing resumes. Volunteers will help develop lesson plans, shape our curriculum, and teach classes once or twice a week.

These skills are extremely important to the Portland day labor community and we need teachers who are committed to making these classes happen!
