The spring 2010 Think & Drink happy-hour conversation brings together photography curator and writer Kirsten Rian and photojournalist Thorne Anderson for a discussion about the ethics of war photography and the role of photographs in shaping our understanding of war on Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at 6:00 at rontoms, 600 E. SCRAP presents Rebel Craft Rumble

May 20th at Imago Theatre (17 8th Ave.), SCRAP presents Rebel Craft Rumble, a crafting competition between some of Portland's craftiest folk. Contestants have ten minutes in each round to create a masterpiece with SCRAP materials. The winner will compete against local craft master Sister Diane!

Celebrity judges include Julie Sabatier of Destination DIY, Lindsay Newkirk of Junk to Funk, and City Commissioner Nick Fish.

Doors at 6:30, event at 7pm. Pre-sale tickets $10, or $15 at the door. Lompoc beer and root beer available for purchase.

At the turn of the twentieth century, architects William Whidden and Ion Lewis stood at the forefront of design in the Pacific Northwest, bringing new styles and innovations to Portland’s commercial, residential, and public buildings. From the six-story Concord Building to Portland’s City Hall, many of the firm’s buildings are today listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Additionally, their residential designs were so prolific that a 1989 book, Matters of Proportion, focused entirely on the firm’s Portland houses.

Tree Care event - this Saturday

To help newly-planted trees and shrubs get a jump on the invasives competition this spring, Friends of Trees is organizing a series of Tree Care events in May at some of our Green Space Initiative native restoration planting sites. It’s a great way to get outside and enjoy the spring weather, as well as help ensure the success of these planting sites.

No experience is necessary! We’ll not only teach you how to remove invasive plant species by hand, but we’ll also teach native plant identification skills and various care techniques.

If you’d like to participate, simply arrive at the site by 9 a.m. and we’ll provide refreshments, gloves and tools. We hope to see you out there!

Hospice volunteers wanted

Housecall Providers Hospice program will begin a new volunteer training series on October 6. We are seeking a group of dedicated volunteers to join us.

Housecall Providers is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that brings primary care medical housecalls to homebound seniors and people with disabilities throughout the Portland metro area. Our hospice program serves our own patients who are near the end of life. Our goal is help our patients remain in their homes and communities with high-quality care, pain management and family support.

REACH Community Development provides quality affordable housing and opportunities for people to thrive.

REACH is finishing renovations in their new North Portland building: Walnut Park Apartments. To commemorate their newly renovated home, the seniors at Walnut Park are having a celebration, including food and festivities.

Two volunteers are needed to help set up, serve food, and clean-up after the event. Come take part in this community building activity, meet new people, and help make this special event a success for people living in REACH housing.

Walnut Park Apartments is located in NE Portland near Martin Luther King Blvd and NE Killingsworth.

Envrironmental School Seeks Ag/Enviro Educator for Volunteer Garden Coordinator Position

Springwater Environmental Sciences School seeks a volunteer Garden Coordinator. Our impressive garden is a fenced space approx. 170’ x 30’ with four large raised beds, a brand new drip irrigation system, and an amphitheater outdoor classroom.

We are located outside the urban growth boundary, near the town of Carver, in a rural setting with stunning views of Mt. Hood. Our students and families are environmentally aware, love spending time outside getting dirty, and are eager to work and learn. All we need is someone with the vision and energy to help us launch and orchestrate the garden program.
