PAPERS: THE MOVIE explores the challenges faced by immigrant youth as they turn 18 without legal status. The film is a collaboration between young people who want to share their stories and community organizations who are working to change immigration policy on behalf of these and other immigrant young people. The film urges Congress to pass the DREAM ACT. Everyone is invited to attend the screening. A freewill offering will be taken. Rare Opportunity to Experience Five Portland Cohousing Communities on November 7 Tour

An all-day tour of Portland, Oregon cohousing communities will be held on Saturday, November 7 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Participants will travel by bus to five communities including Columbia Ecovillage, Peninsula Park Commons, Daybreak Cohousing, Cascadia Commons and Trillium Hollow. Each community will be visited for 40-60 minutes and include fact sheets, site maps and presentations. Lunch will be provided at Daybreak Cohousing, Portland’s newest cohousing community which opened this month.

Learn About a New Culture!Mentors Needed!HAYLO - Helping a Youth Leap Onward 

Are you able and willing to donate your time and skills?  Do you like to have fun?  Would you be interested in welcoming immigrants into our community?  Would you like to learn about a new culture?  Learn a new language?  Would you like to be a mentor?

 

Come share, build, and practice your skills by volunteering your time with us!

 

We are looking for mentors who are willing to help East African, Burmese, Eastern European and Hispanic youth.  Mentors will spend one and a half hours a week helping with homework and English, talking about school, life, and the youth’s future.

Like to Cook? Volunteer at the Solar Waffle Works!

We are seeking volunteers to serve in the Solar Waffle Works, Portland's first solar powered food cart that is an educational training program in socially responsible business for high school students seeking additional assistance in job training and college prep.

We are especially seeking volunteers to fill shifts on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, as well as Saturday and Sunday mornings. There is a possibility of pay in the future, but for now volunteers get to keep tips while we work to pay off our start-up costs and become profitable. The cart is located at 23rd and NE Alberta Street. It'll be fun!

Garlington Center -- Garden Project Coordinator

The tenants of the Garlington Center – North by Northeast Community Health Center, Cascadia Behavioral Healthcare and SMYRC – are in the planning stages of turning a large plot of green space in our back parking lot into the Garlington Garden, a garden to be created, tended to and shared by our clients & volunteers. We are looking for an initiative-taking, enthusiastic volunteer who has some experience in project management and/or community gardens who can, over the next several months, assist us with the planning phase of this project. The time commitment will likely be 10-20 hours/month depending on how you choose to structure the hours.
